Church and château: several historical layers
The Church of Saint-Clair-sur-l'Elle was built in stages from 1050 to the 15th century. Its features bring together several historical periods: the Romanesque door is now closed, but clearly visible from the outside. Other features include an especially unusual porch and 11th-century buttresses. Inside, a small 11th-century piscina and two Renaissance fireplaces in the choir have been preserved. The term “Romanesque” refers to the door, not to the entire construction period. The historic furnishings also include the former north side altar, with two steps, a tabernacle and an altarpiece. It has been listed as movable historic property since 21 May 1982. An altarpiece is an altar backdrop; together with the steps and tabernacle, it forms the furnishings of the former side altar. A piscina is a small ecclesiastical basin and thus a furnishing detail. The porch and buttresses, by contrast, are part of the church's architectural structure.
The château is thought to have been a fortified house from the feudal period. Parts of the water-filled moat and a tower attached to the wall, with loopholes, are still visible. The moat and loopholes are consistent with the interpretation of the site as a fortification, but this remains a supposition.
Fountain, bridge and weekly market
The Delangle family built a monument at the Fontaine Saint-Clair in 1906. Local traditions are also associated with the spring: it is said to have existed since the year 800, and is also believed to have the power to heal eye complaints.
The Pont de la Pierre is an 18th-century bridge. In the past, it was heavily used by carts transporting limestone. It therefore complements the church's architectural history and the château's presumed function with a specific example of its former use for transport.
The weekly market takes place every Tuesday morning at Place de la 29ème division US. Stalls offer galettes, crêpes, tartines, grilled meat, French fries, fish, seafood, cheese and honey. If the market is a factor in planning your stay, make time for Tuesday morning. Check the current market hours in advance, as weekly schedules may change. The selection at individual stalls may also vary.
