The Lande de la carrière in Muneville-le-Bingard covers twelve hectares and is home to Atlantic heath and peat bog habitats. Named trails and historical landmarks offer different points of interest. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these themes and their respective access conditions.

Heath and peat bog habitats

The habitats of the Lande include acidic bogs, oligotrophic waters, pioneer heath habitats, raised bogs, and wet heath with bell heather. Oligotrophic describes waters that are low in nutrients; pioneer habitats represent early stages in the development of heath. These terms give nature enthusiasts more precise guidance: they distinguish both the type of habitat and its development.

Access to the Lande de la carrière

Public access is limited to construction work and scientific observations, and is available by request to the quarry operators. So do not plan to visit the Lande as an open-access walking area. This restriction is an important difference from the trails described below.

Two trails, different themes

The “Les Moulins, les Ecuyers” trail is marked in yellow and is considered easy. It passes through built-up and natural cultivated landscapes, including bocage hedgerows and heathland. Bocage refers to a landscape divided by hedges. The route therefore features both heath and a cultivated landscape shaped by hedgerows.

The Circuit du Moulin starts at the Moulin du bourg and leads visitors to discover the sunken lanes of Muneville-le-Bingard. Sunken lanes are cut-in routes whose surface lies lower than the surrounding terrain. Trail conditions can vary seasonally; check them before setting out. The mill is on private property, and access is prohibited. Take this access restriction into account when planning the route.

The two trails offer different points of interest: for the “Les Moulins, les Ecuyers” trail, its markings, difficulty rating, and cultivated landscape are key details. The Circuit du Moulin focuses on sunken lanes as a destination and on seasonally variable trail conditions.

Art and the history of the mill

The Église Saint-Pierre houses the marble statue “Vierge allaitant l’Enfant” from the second quarter of the 14th century. It is classified as a historic object. The French title means “Virgin nursing the Child”; its material and date make this artwork a specific point of reference for Muneville-Le-Bingard’s cultural history.

The existence of the Moulin du bourg has been documented since the 18th century. This makes it a different historical reference point from the dated statue: here, the focus is on the history of a mill, while the statue is a specific work of art. The prohibition on entering the mill must still be taken into account when planning. The statue dates to the 14th century, while the mill has been documented since the 18th century.
