In Les Pieux, Anse de Sciotot, striking coastal heights and paths of very different lengths shape the way you plan your trip. Between a four-kilometre-long bay, a long-distance trail and a challenging circular route, you can focus on the landscape, a longer hike or individual discoveries. Historical and archaeological traces complement the coastal theme; by the sea, seasonal wildlife watching and specific activities are also on offer.

Coast and landscape

Anse de Sciotot stretches for four kilometres from Cap de Flamanville to Cap du Rozel. The GR 223 coastal trail crosses the bay and offers hikers views of the English Channel. The bay is also a haven for abundant wildlife: seabirds nest there or stop to rest during migration. Their presence therefore also depends on the season.

Two striking rock formations shape the coastal landscape. La Roche Ă  Coucou is a natural rocky spur of Armorican sandstone that rises 135 metres above the bay. From there, panoramic views stretch from Cap du Rozel to Cap de Flamanville. Cap du Rozel itself is a 130-metre-high rocky headland overlooking Anse de Sciotot and Surtainville beach.

At Plage de Sciotot, the swimming area is supervised daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in July and August. Check these seasonal hours again before your trip if you are planning your visit around them.

Coastal trail and hiking routes

The GR 223, also known as the “Sentier des douaniers” (Customs Officers’ Path), is an 80-kilometre long-distance trail. It runs from Plage d’Urville-Nacqueville in the north to the dunes of Surtainville in the south, passing through Anse de Sciotot. The trail was once used for coastal surveillance: until the beginning of the 20th century, it served to prevent or curb smuggling with the Anglo-Norman Islands. If you plan to hike the trail, take local advice on trail conditions and waymarking into account.

A shorter but very challenging option is the “Entre terre et mer – No. 166” circular route. Its 23.6 kilometres are listed as taking 5 hours and 40 minutes; distance and duration may vary depending on conditions. The route also passes near the ruins of an old chapel. Access to some historic remains may be restricted.

At La Roche Ă  Coucou, marked paths wind through flowering heathland, Norman bocage, steep cliffs and sandy beaches. Choosing a route here brings together a range of landscapes; conditions and access may change. Check local advice before setting out.

Traces of history and activities by the sea

At the summit of Cap du Rozel stands the statue Maris Stella, also known as the “Vierge des marins” (Virgin of the Sailors). The work is by Joseph Bataille. Footprints left by Neanderthals are also preserved in the ground at the cape. They are associated with regular human settlement around 80,000 years ago. Access conditions to the site may vary.

For water-based activities, Hague Sud Plongée offers discovery dives, introductory sea dives, and Level 1 to 3 training in the pool and at sea. The Centre d’Activités Voile et Vent in Les Pieux offers land sailing, outdoor games, Longe-côte®, coastal walking in the water and a range of multi-activity options. Check current participation requirements and available activities before your trip.

The Marché des Pieux can also be included in your plans: it takes place every Friday morning and offers the chance to meet local producers. Checking the date again before you leave will help you plan your market visit.
