At Mont-Saint-Michel, you’ll encounter a rocky island, vast tidal sands, a Gothic Benedictine abbey and a village protected by walls. This combination makes the site a destination for both landscape and history enthusiasts. Its maritime character was restored in 2015. Abbey and medieval history

The Benedictine abbey was founded in 966 on a sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Michael since 708. Mont-Saint-Michel was a place of pilgrimage throughout the Middle Ages and an important centre of medieval Christian civilisation. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the abbey was a technical and artistic achievement adapted to a challenging natural setting. The Gothic convent building, La Merveille, includes the Hôtes and Chevaliers halls, a refectory and a cloister open to the sea. Three augmented-reality routes in the abbey explore its medieval history and its history in the 19th century.

The ramparts offer a different perspective on the site: the public walkway connects seven towers. From the Tour du Nord, you can see the tidal bore. If you’re interested in the fortifications, you can plan this route as a complement to the abbey’s interior.

Plan your visit: access and routes

The village is free to access; a ticket is required to enter the abbey, and booking in advance is recommended. The rock is accessible day and night, while the shuttle and abbey each have their own operating hours. Check the latest hours and ticket information before your trip.

The former causeway access has been replaced by a bridge walkway. The visitor shuttle departs from the stop in front of the CIT; depending on visitor numbers, departures are every five to twelve minutes. It has access ramps and onboard audio assistance. Frequency and facilities may change, so it’s a good idea to check before travelling.

Walking from the parking areas to the abbey entrance takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour. There are many stairs within the abbey grounds; sturdy footwear and a suitable level of fitness are recommended. This information can help you plan your walk and visit as separate parts of your day.

Guided trips in the bay

There are various guided options for exploring the bay, including traditional crossings, discovery walks, high-tide trips and night crossings. Crossings are led by certified guides. Local specialities

Salt-meadow lamb grazes for 70 days in bay meadows that are periodically covered by the sea. Mère Poulard’s soufflé omelette is served on the Mont all year round. Local cuisine thus brings together a product of the tidal landscape and a dish available on the Mont throughout the year.
