A windmill with a roof that can turn 360 degrees gives Fierville-les-Mines a distinctive technical focus. The Moulin à vent du Cotentin was built in 1744; its roof can rotate to catch the wind as effectively as possible. There is also a circular trail through the bocage landscape and a high altar ensemble in the Église Saint-Pierre. Together, windmill technology, landscape and sacred art offer different considerations when choosing a destination for your stay.

The Mill and Its Craft

The Moulin Ă  vent du Cotentin is one of the few windmills in Normandy that is still in operation. Tours and events introduce visitors to the miller's work, traditional mechanisms and the production of flour. The mill produces stone-ground flour from wheat, buckwheat and spelt. So the story goes beyond the year it was built: the mechanics and processing of different grains are part of the same milling practice. The rotating roof shows the building's technical side; the flours made from wheat, buckwheat and spelt also give the mill's work a tangible connection to its products. Those interested in regional cultural history will therefore find not only a historic building, but also a subject that brings together construction and craftsmanship.

Events and Workshops

The FĂŞte des cabanosiers takes place at the Moulin Ă  vent du Cotentin in Fierville-les-Mines. Held outdoors every year on a public holiday, it features local events and traditional craftsmanship. This offers a different focus from a tour: here, the emphasis is on the event program and craft skills. Reservations are mandatory for the Ateliers du Moulin du Cotentin because places are limited. Anyone wishing to take part in a workshop should make this a fixed step in their plans.

Bocage Landscape and Circular Trail

The “Les légendes du Cotentin” circular trail is 8.3 kilometers long. It starts at the Moulin à vent du Cotentin and passes through the bocage landscape, hamlets and along green lanes. As a circular trail, it offers a different perspective on Fierville-les-Mines: rather than viewing the mill as a building in isolation, visitors can combine it with a walk through a landscape that specifically includes hamlets and green lanes. The route thus has a clearly identified starting point and a specific length. The Lande de Fierville-les-Mines is also of interest for its landscape. The Moulin de la Lande is located on this heath, which rises to an elevation of 120 meters.

Church Art at Saint-Pierre

The Église Saint-Pierre houses a high altar ensemble made of carved, polychrome-painted wood. The ensemble includes a painting of the calling of the Apostles Peter and Andrew; it is dated 1754. Alongside the mill's technical history, this provides a focus on art history: the material, colorful decoration and the biblical subject depicted belong together, while the date places the ensemble in time. The two subjects are clearly distinct. At the mill, the focus is on mechanics and flour production; in the church, it is on the carved altar and its imagery. Together, they offer culture-minded visitors different points to consider when deciding whether Fierville-les-Mines is right for their stay.
