A trip to Le Vrétot can focus on two different things: historic buildings and a walk with views of the Scye Valley landscape. The buildings themselves raise further questions, as they reflect different periods and historical functions.

Church and historic buildings

The present-day Église Notre-Dame des Anges was completely rebuilt from 1867 onward and solemnly consecrated on 21 September 1879. It is one of the historic sites worth seeing in the Bricquebec area. Its construction history provides a clear point of reference in the 19th century; its place in the Bricquebec area also sets it in a broader regional context. The church can therefore be considered a cultural and historical attraction in its own right.

The Manoir de Malassis in Le Vrétot was once one of the feudal estates of the Barony of Bricquebec. A register of the fiefs belonging to the Barony of Bricquebec in the Cotentin includes an entry for the fief of Malassis; the register was probably compiled in the 13th century. This tentative dating provides an approximate timeframe. It differs from the church’s construction history and offers another perspective on the history of lordship in the Cotentin.

The Pont de Malassis crosses the River La Scye. Two round arches are separated by a triangular cutwater pier. These structural features make the description of the crossing concrete; stylistically, the bridge has features of bridges built in the 17th century. The comparison therefore concerns its architectural style. The Manoir du Danois is another historical point of interest: it was probably built between 1621 and 1625, and a chapel was founded there in 1664. The Manoir de Lanquetot was the seat of a lordship. Le Vrétot thus offers a range of aspects of architectural and seigneurial history, rather than just a single period.

Walking with views of the Scye Valley

Le haut des côtes is an easy 7.6-kilometre walking route. It offers panoramic views of the bocage hills of the Scye Valley. The distance and difficulty rating provide two practical points of reference for planning your day. Check whether the route fits in with your other plans, and allow time for the walk according to your own pace.

The walk starts at 2860 Route du Vrétot in Bricquebec-en-Cotentin. You can get there using the Cap Cotentin bus network, via the “Le Vrétot – Hôtel Launay” stop. Check the current service and route information before travelling, as transport arrangements and starting points may change.

Choose a focus for your stay

If historic sites are your main interest, the different histories of lordship and architecture can help guide your choice of what to explore during your stay. This lets you plan your trip around the interests that matter most to you.
