You can get to know Le Mesnil-Ozenne through its views, historic church sites and various trails. The Table d'orientation offers views of the village centre, the surrounding countryside and the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. Also worth discovering are the Église Saint-Martin and the Grotte du Val, whose history is linked to former mills.

Views and trails

The Table d'orientation was inaugurated in 1998 and sits at an altitude of 185 m. From here, you can look out over the village centre, the surrounding countryside and the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. The viewpoint offers both a panorama of the village and views of the wider landscape. The Circuit du Val and the Circuit du Moulin des Bois also start at the Table.

Other trails offer different points of reference for planning. The Chemin du Val is about 4 kilometres long; this approximate distance can help you estimate the route, but does not replace checking trail conditions before setting out. A hiking trail leads towards Marcilly and the Voie verte there, in the direction of Mont-Saint-Michel.

The Église Saint-Martin

The present-day Église Saint-Martin was built from 1856 on the initiative of the parish priest at the time, Isidore Le Provost, and consecrated in 1876. These two dates mark different stages in its history: the start of construction and the later consecration. A distinctive detail of the building’s history can also be seen in the bell tower, which was left unfinished. The dressed stones intended for it are still visible beneath the large yew tree in the cemetery.

Inside, the panelling of the Église Saint-Martin is listed in the supplementary inventory of church furnishings. Former religious customs are also part of the local history. The Calvaire de l’If was once associated with processions for harvest celebrations, on Rogation Days and on Corpus Christi. The church thus brings together architectural history and religious tradition, both of which span more than one period.

The church is also a trail junction: it stands where paths to the Grotte Notre-Dame du Val, the GR 22, the Chemins de Saint-Michel and the Voie verte towards Mont-Saint-Michel meet. The named destinations and routes can help you find your way here. You can incorporate these connections into your plans without confusing them with the other trails described at the viewpoint or towards Marcilly.

The Grotte du Val

The site of the Grotte du Val was originally home to two mills. In 1898, the grotto was built from stones from former mills, with help from local residents. Its origins thus connect the site’s former use with the later construction of a place of devotion. The Grotte du Val continues to be visited by the faithful and remains a place of worship. Alongside its architectural history, it therefore has a continuing religious significance.

Breaks and village walks

The municipal hall, built in 2017, is open to everyone for picnics, rest breaks and use of the toilets. It is located at the junction of several local hiking trails and offers a high-quality welcome to tourists, cyclists and hikers. If you plan to stop at the hall, it is a good idea to check the conditions for the stated uses before your visit.

Guided village walks led by local guides are also available in Le Mesnil-Ozenne. Check availability in advance. The viewpoint, church trails, historic sites and hall cater to different interests: you can focus on views of the landscape, architectural and local history, or a hike. Also check trail conditions for your planned route before setting out.
