In the north, Bretteville has a coastline about 2.5 kilometres long. It also has small coastal streams, sweeping views across the bay of northern Cotentin, and tangible traces of prehistoric times. If you are planning a trip, you will find a range of ways to spend your time here: exploring the landscape, church architecture, archaeological remains and a walking route.

Coast, Views and Waterways

In clear weather, the view from Pointe du Heu stretches across the bay of northern Cotentin, from Pointe de la Hague and the Cherbourg roadstead to the Semaphore de Fermanville. Visibility depends on the weather. The coast lies to the north of the commune; to the west, the coastal stream Pas Vastel forms Bretteville’s boundary and runs through the Grand Val.

The Grand Val stream follows a route of its own: it rises in the hamlet of Les Fontaines, flows down to the hamlet of Besnard, is joined by the Petit Val stream, and empties at La Vallée. Two other very short coastal streams cross the area of Bretteville; one runs through the Vallée des Chênes. These names and routes offer a detailed sense of the landscape, distinct from the open coast.

Church and Stone Age Remains

The Church of Saint-Germain dates from the 15th century. Its rectangular slate-covered tower, built in the 17th century, has a four-sided roof and is considered unique in the region. Above the portal is a statue, probably dating from the 16th century, depicting either Saint Michael or Saint Hubert. There is also a 16th-century limestone Madonna and Child. Both figures have been listed as historic objects since 1974. Coats of arms featuring six green oak leaves are incorporated into the keystones, some of the pillars and other parts of the building.

A prehistoric tomb, also known as an allée couverte, lies in the hamlet of La Forge. It has a side entrance and is considered one of the few surviving monuments of this type in Normandy. The structure is 17 metres long, 1.10 metres wide inside, and aligned from north to south. Almost all of its supporting stones have survived, as have remains of a peristalith. This ring of small blocks once enclosed and stabilised the tumulus. The monument’s dimensions, alignment and surviving structural elements make its architectural form easy to understand.

Pointe du Heu is also associated with prehistoric times: a Stone Age site or workshop was discovered there in 1879. Finds included numerous flakes and worked flint tools. The discovery adds a specific archaeological dimension to the landscape.

Hiking and Planning Your Route

Entre vaux et hameaux is a moderately difficult hike covering 6.9 kilometres, with an estimated duration of about one hour and 30 minutes. The route is marked in green and is described as a walk through the countryside focused on natural and cultural heritage. It starts at the stadium car park on the heights of Bretteville. From there, the footpath heads towards the hamlet of Les Cordeliers and continues along the Chemin de la Cavée. Stops along the way include the heath known as La lande de Brettefey.

The route’s starting point is accessible via Cap Cotentin network bus line C, getting off at the Bretteville-en-Saire La plage stop. Check the timetable and trail conditions before setting out. You should also double-check the distance, difficulty level and duration before you leave. The long-distance GR® 223 trail, also known as the Customs Officers’ Path, is another coastal route that passes through Bretteville-en-Saire.
