Gavray can be discovered through a variety of experiences: hiking trails along the Sienne and Bérence, historic sites, art and regional tastings. The landscape of the municipality of Gavray-sur-Sienne is characterised by rolling bocage countryside and deeply incised waterways. The ZNIEFF “La Sienne et ses principaux affluents-frayères” includes the municipality.

Countryside, trails and historic sites

The Quartier de la Planche lies on the 14.5-kilometre hiking trail no. 9, “Entre Sienne et Bérence”. The “Les chemins de Gavray” circular trail follows the Bérence towards La Baleine and the Sienne Valley. Northeast of Gavray, this circular route becomes technically demanding and particularly difficult. If you are planning to hike it, take this section into account when choosing your route.

In the Quartier de la Planche, you can see several traditional houses and a washhouse. The Chapelle Saint Jean Baptiste stands in the cemetery of Gavray-sur-Sienne and dates from the early 17th century. The Vestiges du Château Ducal site offers a different point of reference in time: it is mentioned in a document from 832. The ruins stand on a rocky spur 80 metres above the Sienne and Bérence rivers. In 2026, they are free to enter and freely accessible; guided tours take place in summer.

Autumn fair and contemporary art

The Foire Saint-Luc has been held since 1198. Organised by the municipality of Gavray-sur-Sienne, it is a three-day autumn fair. Friday’s programme includes a horse and foal show. Tastings of local products are also offered. If you want to plan your visit around the fair, check the dates for your trip.

Le ravitaillement is a venue for art and rural practice founded in Gavray-sur-Sienne in 2021. Its programme includes contemporary art exhibitions shown from April to November, as well as performances, artist residencies and workshops. Alongside historic sites, contemporary art and artistic practice are therefore other themes to choose from for your trip.

Riverside, garden and regional specialities

The Carrefour des randonneurs is a wetland typical of the banks of the Sienne. It has a fishing platform for people with disabilities. Le Jardin de la Chevallerie, with more than 400 plant species, is located in Sourdeval-les-Bois within Gavray-sur-Sienne. Riverside, hiking trails and garden offer different ways to include nature and the countryside in your trip.

Visits focused on food and drink are another option. Andouillerie La Baleine is one of the last traditional producers of Andouille de Vire. A visit explains how it is made and shares its secrets, followed by a tasting. Distillerie Montjoie is open all year. Visits with tastings are also available there year-round by reservation. Its range includes gin, pastis and numerous liqueurs. While Andouillerie focuses on the production of andouille, Montjoie offers insights into a range of spirits.
