Le Bec-Hellouin can be explored from several perspectives: its abbey history, a variety of trails and a wetland area. There is also a museum featuring kitchen utensils and a seasonal farm shop. Visiting arrangements vary depending on the attraction; the farm shop in particular is seasonal.

Abbey history and cultural heritage

From the 11th century onward, Notre-Dame du Bec Abbey was one of the most important spiritual and intellectual centres in Western Christendom. When planning a visit, it is important to distinguish between freely accessible areas and the monument: the park and church areas are open free of charge, while visits to the monument are guided. Opening times and access arrangements may change, so check them before your visit.

Église Saint-André houses numerous 17th-century works classified as historic monuments, which come from the former abbey church. The abbey thus represents a long historical perspective, while the classified works offer a specific art-historical view of the 17th century.

Trails with different character

Le Bec-Hellouin can be a starting point or a stop along the Voie verte. The signed and secured route runs for 42 km from Évreux to Le Bec-Hellouin and ends in Pont-Authou. The Voie verte can be reached on foot, by bicycle or on roller skates from the former SNCF railway station. Local access arrangements may change; check them before setting out.

The “Circuit Les Bénédictins” loop follows a rural path between meadows to the RD39 road towards Monastère Sainte Françoise Romaine. This offers a choice between a signed, secured route and a loop with a rural-path character. Le Bec-Hellouin has also been a stage on the Chemin aux Anglais and the Chemin de Rouen since 2019. As route arrangements may change, check the current route before setting out.

Wetlands and farm shop

The Zone humide du Bec extends across the municipalities of Pont-Authou and Le Bec-Hellouin. Its mosaic of wetland habitats includes tree-lined banks along a watercourse, ponds, grazed wet meadows and tall herb meadows known as megaphorbia. With its dense and diverse flora, typical of wetlands, the area provides particularly important habitat for the conservation of wildlife.

The Ferme biologique du Bec-Hellouin also offers a glimpse of farming and its produce. The farm can be visited during farm shop opening hours. Products on offer include fruit, vegetables, aromatic plants and processed goods grown or made by hand or using animal traction. Shop hours are seasonal and may change, so check them in advance.

Cooking culture as another theme

The Musée L’Art Culinaire in Le Bec-Hellouin presents an exhibition of kitchen utensils and equipment. This cultural focus is on objects related to the culinary arts, offering a different theme from the abbey’s history and the classified works in Église Saint-André. The museum’s offerings may change; check before visiting to confirm whether the exhibition is still on display.

This offers several different areas of focus for planning: abbey history and art, a specific route, a loop with a rural character or the wetland habitats. Those interested in farming can also consider the seasonal farm shop. Choose according to the interests of your trip and check the relevant access or shop hours before your visit.
