Chambray lies in the Eure Valley and combines distinctive heritage with a specific river trip: the Château de Chambray includes arcaded outbuildings, a chapel and a wooded park; hydrospeed tours on the Eure run from Chambray to Pont de l’Arche. This gives you two different ways to experience the area: the architectural history of an estate and a river route with several stops along the way.

Château de Chambray: Buildings and Park

The façades and roofs of all the outbuildings, as well as the chapel, are partially protected as Historic Monuments. The château also has a wrought-iron entrance gate, the Pont de Tourzel and a wooded park with garden parterres and bosquets. The arcades define the outbuildings; the park, bridge, gate and chapel add other architectural and landscape features.

The arcades are the rows of arches on the outbuildings. Garden parterres and bosquets represent different forms of park landscaping. The château thus brings together protected structures, other architectural features and landscaped green spaces. If you are interested in historic estates, you can look beyond a single building to the interplay of different architectural and garden elements.

Église Saint-Martin and Historic Building Phases

The Église Saint-Martin is a hall church built in the mid-16th century and was consecrated in 1552. Its bell tower was added in the 17th century. This reveals a sequence over time: the church was built and consecrated, and the tower was added later. This gap in time is a specific detail of the building’s history; the church and its tower do not belong to the same construction phase.

Railway and Water Route

The Chemin de Fer de la Vallée de l’Eure heritage railway now operates the line between Breuilpont and Chambray. This section is part of the former line from Bueil to La Croix-Saint-Leufroy. The tourist railway in the Eure Valley first ran on November 1, 1996. If you plan to take a trip on the heritage railway, check the timetable in advance. The section currently in operation is only part of the former connection.

Hydrospeed tours are offered on the Eure from Chambray to Pont de l’Arche. The route passes through Acquigny, Louviers, Val-de-Reuil and Léry, among other places. The river trip is therefore quite different from the railway section: the hydrospeed route runs between Chambray and Pont de l’Arche, while the heritage railway connects Breuilpont and Chambray.
