Thiéville can be explored through a range of themes: the former cotton mill tells the story of changing industrial uses, Saint Martin offers specific architectural details, and route descriptions give an approximate distance and highlight a distinctive feature in the village. If you are planning a stay, you can decide whether to focus mainly on industrial history, church architecture or walking routes.

Industrial History on the Dives

The former cotton mill in Thiéville was built by Aumont in 1843 and is located on the Dives river. Its use as a spinning mill was later followed by a small metalworking business; today, it is a metal surface treatment facility. Its history therefore encompasses several industrial functions: the name of the site recalls cotton production, while its later development led to metalworking. The sequence of construction date, builder and changes of use makes the former mill a tangible way to explore local industrial history.

Saint Martin Church: Façade and Bell Tower

Saint Martin Church can be appreciated through several architectural details. Its west façade has a pointed-arch portal above two lancet windows, with a rose window separating them. A pointed-arch portal is topped by a pointed arch, while lancet windows are narrow windows that taper to a point at the top. Together, these features form a clearly ordered sequence of portal, windows and rose window.

The square bell tower is divided into four levels by three projecting cornices. A cornice is a projecting horizontal architectural feature; here, three cornices structure the tower into four sections. A corner turret houses the stairwell. Inside, there is also an equestrian statue of Saint Martin in the style of the 17th century. It adds a named feature to the interior alongside the exterior architectural forms.

Calvary Cross and Map Reference

The Calvary cross was restored after storm damage in December 2023 and inaugurated on 12 October 2024. The dates indicate the sequence: the damage was followed by restoration, then the inauguration. The Manoir de la Commanderie is marked as stop number 86 on the official tourist map. If you use the map for orientation, you can find the entry under this number.

Walking Routes with Different Highlights

A circular route of approximately 15 kilometres runs around the Jardin de Manou. “Derrière chez moi” is suggested as a possible title for it. The approximate distance gives you an indication of the route’s length that you can factor into your plans. A third circular route leads into the village of Thiéville, where flat stones are highlighted in particular. The two descriptions use different points of reference: for the route around the Jardin, the distance and a possible title are given; for the third, the focus is on the route into the village and the flat stones.
