A municipal cultural and historical walking tour, a church with a medieval choir and traces of the Second World War offer different ways to explore Sommervieu’s history. The timeline stretches from the first mention of a fortress in 1371 to the B-8 airfield, built in 1944. Historic parks, a farmstead and a manor house add to the picture. Sommervieu is therefore home to several different forms of architectural and cultural heritage.

A cultural and historical walking tour as a starting point

Sommer’Balade is a municipal cultural and historical walking tour of notable places in Sommervieu. It starts in the park near the community hall. Both the theme and starting point are clearly defined. The tour offers a framework for discovering the town, while its buildings and historical traces highlight different periods in their own right. Anyone interested in Sommervieu will find more than a single chapter of local history: medieval architecture, 18th-century grounds and evidence of the Second World War are among the town’s varied themes.

Church: architectural history, stained glass and embroidery

Sommervieu’s church has preserved its nearly intact choir, dating from the late 13th century. Very elongated lancet windows illuminate the choir and draw attention to its architectural details. The church also has 19 stained-glass windows: six have been restored, and seven more were created in 2005 and 2006. The building’s history and its stained glass are two distinct aspects of the church. The Stations of the Cross inside are a subject in their own right: they follow the pattern of the Bayeux Tapestry and were made by fifteen embroiderers from the community. The work thus combines its connection to Bayeux with local craftsmanship.

Fortress, seminary and water features

The history of the former seminary grounds dates back to 1371, when a fortress in Sommervieu was mentioned for the first time. The former Château-Séminaire complex includes a chapel, a crypt, a park and moats. The water features can also be dated: the moats and two ponds of the former seminary were created between 1729 and 1753. These dates mark different stages: the first mention of a fortress and the later development of the water features. Together, these details give the site a longer history than the building phases of individual residences and manor houses.

Château de la Réserve and other historic buildings

The Château de la Réserve was built around the second third of the 18th century in a style typical of the Bessin region. Its park is laid out in the English style. Named features include a row of lime trees, a sequoia and two copper beeches. At the Ferme du château, the cider press points to an earlier period: it bears traces dating from the 16th century. The Manoir de Chédeville, meanwhile, displays two distinct building phases. Its main building dates from the first half of the 17th century, while its façade is from the mid-18th century. When looking at the historic buildings, it is therefore worth considering the main building and the façade as separate points in time.

B-8 airfield and activities today

The forward airfield B-8 was built from 14 to 22 June 1944 on the boundary between Sommervieu, Saint-Vigor-le-Grand and Magny-en-Bessin. It was in operation until August 1945 and was 1,200 metres long. The short construction period in June 1944 thus contrasts with the subsequent period of operation; its length provides another specific measure of the site. Sommervieu’s municipal park offers a different focus, with play equipment for children. Weekly activities such as yoga take place in the multi-purpose hall. The topics covered therefore range from architecture and local history to recreational activities.

These features are easy to distinguish when choosing a destination: Sommervieu offers cultural and historical subjects spanning several centuries, as well as parks and weekly activities.
