Saint-Sylvain combines a long church history with municipal green spaces and several forms of cycling. The different themes are particularly interesting when choosing a destination: the church and a possible Roman connection offer a glimpse into local history, two parks each have their own character, and the pump track and cycling club provide different ways to get active. This allows you to shape your stay around the topics that interest you most.

The town is also easy to place geographically: Saint-Sylvain lies on the transport route between Caen and Falaise.

The church and local history

The original Saint-Sylvain church was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. The parish church of Saint-Sylvain has been partially protected as a Monument Historique since December 14, 1914. The construction period and protected status offer two different historical perspectives: one describes its development over several centuries, while the other records the partial protection of the parish church since 1914. The church thus combines a long construction period with a precisely dated protected status in the history of the town.

A Roman site is also believed to have existed at Bignette, also known as Coquerel—a possible additional point of interest in local history alongside the church. The cautious wording is important: this is a possible site, not a confirmed fact.

Green spaces with different focuses

Parc de la Vallée lies in the heart of the commune and was created by redeveloping the former SIAM site. This sets it apart from Parc de la Flatière, where green-space management is specifically linked to grazing. Since March 30, 2022, Ouessant and Landes de Bretagne sheep have been used there to maintain the green spaces and promote biodiversity across an area of about 12,000 m².

In 2021, four beehives were also installed in Parc de la Flatière as part of an educational initiative. Grazing and beehives represent different aspects of the park: maintaining green spaces and promoting biodiversity on the one hand, and a time-specific educational initiative on the other. Parc de la Vallée, by comparison, is defined by the redevelopment of the former SIAM site. The municipal green-space projects can therefore be distinguished by their individual focuses.

Pump track and cycling

The Saint-Sylvain pump track is located near the football pitches and is designed for bicycles, scooters and skateboards. It therefore extends the cycling theme to include scooters and skateboards. Helmets are compulsory at the facility. The Association des Randonneurs Cyclotouristes de Saint-Sylvain (ARCSS) offers road cycling, mountain biking and gravel cycling activities, and is open to all three forms of cycling; helmets are also compulsory on rides.

The difference lies in the format: the pump track is a specific facility for bicycles, scooters and skateboards, while the ARCSS offers activities in three forms of cycling. If you are planning a specific activity, check the current helmet requirements and the club's information about rides and participation.

A dated running event

The first Saint Sylvannaise took place on March 9, 2025. The two races, over 8 km and 12 km, followed the streets of Saint-Sylvain and paths in the communes of Soignolles and Valambray. This route description refers to that first edition. As a dated sporting event, the race complements the themes of the church, parks and cycling with a specific route that connects Saint-Sylvain with paths in two other communes.
