Villers-Bocage offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the Wednesday weekly market, walking and orienteering routes in Bois de l’Ecanet, and architecture and local history. Wednesday market provides a fixed time to plan around; the nature trails differ in length and intended audience, while the church and historical walks focus on heritage.

Wednesday Weekly Market

The Villers-Bocage weekly market (Marché hebdomadaire de Villers-Bocage) takes place every Wednesday morning in Place du Maréchal Leclerc and Rue Jeanne Bacon. Stalls include local and organic products, fish, fresh produce, crêpes and galettes, cured meats, and dairy and cheese products. If the market is part of your stay, Wednesday morning is the relevant time to plan around. It is worth checking for possible local changes before travelling.

Walking and Orienteering in Bois de l’Ecanet

Bois de l’Ecanet is part of Villers-Bocage’s natural heritage. The landscaped park lies in the heart of a valley and is crossed by the Ecanet stream. A 1.2-kilometre walking trail is used by walkers, people exercising and nature lovers.

Bois de l’Ecanet also has a permanent orienteering course with two routes. The green route is 1.5 kilometres long and intended for children and beginners. The blue route is 2 kilometres long and is aimed at people familiar with the sport. This makes it possible to compare their lengths directly: the walking trail is shorter than both orienteering routes, and the blue route is the longest of the three paths mentioned. The two colour-coded routes also differ in the level of experience they are intended for. Check equipment arrangements locally.

Church and Historical Routes

Église Saint-Martin de Villers-Bocage has held the “Patrimoine du XXᵉ siècle” label since 2004. Its bell tower is 33 metres high and visible from a distance of six kilometres.

Promenade historique à Villers-Bocage is a walking tour through the town that introduces its history, heritage and architecture. La Balade de la Vierge Noire also starts in Villers-Bocage, but follows local roads to explore the town’s heritage. These are two different kinds of historical outing: a themed walk through the town and a route starting from Villers-Bocage that follows local roads.

A Historical Landmark

On 13 June 1944, a battle took place in Villers-Bocage between the armoured units of the British 7th Division and the German 101st Heavy Tank Battalion. The date and the units involved give this event a specific place in local history; it complements the architectural and cultural themes explored along the historical routes.
