Discover Saint-Germain-De-Livet through its architecture, works of art and landscape: the Château-Musée brings together richly varied architecture and the history of the Riesener-Pillaut family. The Église Saint-Germain offers a different perspective, from its Romanesque nave to the surviving graves in the cemetery. If you plan to spend more time in the area, the 13.5-kilometre circular walk also provides a specific way to combine the château with a longer route.
Château-Musée and the architecture of the Pays d’Auge
The Château-Musée de Saint-Germain-de-Livet is designated a Musée de France. It displays the furnishings and collections of the Riesener-Pillaut family. The building itself also tells the story of different architectural styles: it combines a half-timbered manor house with a structure made of stone and glazed bricks from Pré d’Auge. The Château-Musée is protected as a historic monument; its architecture dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
The contrast between half-timbering, stone and glazed bricks makes the variety of the architecture especially tangible. Remarkable 16th-century frescoes survive in the room that once housed the service areas. Gardens and quiet moats surround the château. Architecture, collections and landscaped grounds thus come together at the same site. This gives culturally minded travellers a clear focus, without limiting the description of the village to the château alone.
Church, Orants and Jardin de l’Abbé Marie
The Église Saint-Germain has a Romanesque nave and a Romanesque choir. A seigneurial chapel was added to the south side of the choir in the 16th century, and its remains are still there. The church also contains three 16th- and 17th-century Orants classified as objects. They depict members of the de Tournebu family. The architecture and artworks bring together different centuries and forms of remembrance.
The cemetery also preserves traces of the past: among its many graves are very old examples in the form of stelae. The Jardin de l’Abbé Marie is located in the former parish cemetery between the Église Saint-Germain-de-Livet and the river that flows around the château. Small gardens of perennials are laid out at the foot of the graves. The church, cemetery and garden thus form another distinct part of the village landscape. When finding your way, note the garden’s exact location: it is in the former cemetery between the church and the river.
Circular walk and electric scooter rides
The “Autour du château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet” route is a moderately difficult 13.5-kilometre circular walk, with a stated duration of three hours. It starts at the Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet car park. After following a grassy path alongside a field, the route enters a wooded area. The distance, difficulty level and duration give you specific information to help plan the walk as an activity in its own right. Check the trail conditions before setting out.
As a different way to explore the area, Pays d’Auge Evasion offers guided all-terrain electric scooter rides starting at the château. Rides of 1.5 or three hours are available and are described as suitable for families or friends. This gives you a choice between a circular walk and guided rides of different durations. Before making plans, check whether a ride is available on your preferred date.
Plan your stay around your interests
When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the different highlights: the Château-Musée is the focal point for architecture and the Riesener-Pillaut family collections; the Église Saint-Germain complements it with Romanesque features, chapel remains and classified Orants. The garden and cemetery offer a distinct perspective on the historic layout of the village. The circular walk, meanwhile, is described as a longer activity, covering 13.5 kilometres and taking three hours. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay mainly on culture and architecture or to allow additional time for a walk or a guided ride.
