Le Vey can be explored through a range of hiking routes: the 9 km “Pain de Sucre – Rochers des Parcs” circular route starts in the village, while the GR® de Pays Tour de la Suisse Normandie enters the village after crossing the bridge over the Orne. Other highlights include the forest climb to Pain de Sucre, the cliffs of Les Rochers des Parcs with their climbing routes, and the parish church of Saint-Laurent. This mix offers different focuses for planning a trip: a circular route, a longer trail, climbing and architectural history.

Hiking in and through Le Vey

The “Pain de Sucre – Rochers des Parcs” hike is a 9 km circular route that starts in the village of Le Vey. This gives the route two specific defining features: its stated length and its circular format. If you want to choose a route based on these features, you can clearly distinguish it from trail descriptions in which Le Vey is a section of a longer route. Starting in the village makes the circular route directly relevant when planning a hike from Le Vey.

The “Vallée de l'Orne autour de Clécy” hike follows the GR® 36 to Le Vey, then crosses the bridge and returns to the starting point. Its route is laid out in stages: first the section along the GR® 36 to Le Vey, then the bridge crossing on the return. This distinguishes it from the 9 km circular route that starts in the village. When choosing between them, it therefore matters whether you prefer a loop starting from Le Vey or a route that passes through Le Vey.

After crossing the bridge over the Orne, the GR® de Pays Tour de la Suisse Normandie leads to Le Vey, then continues along the GR® 36 towards Thury-Harcourt – Le Hom. The bridge plays a different role here than on the “Vallée de l'Orne autour de Clécy” hike: on that route, the return journey across the bridge begins after Le Vey; here, the crossing leads into the village, from where the trail continues. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by the sequence of their passages through Le Vey.

Forest climb, cliffs and architectural history

The GR® de Pays Tour de la Suisse Normandie climbs through the forest to Pain de Sucre. From there, the view stretches over Clécy and the loop of the Orne. The climb and the view are part of a specifically described section of the trail: the forest path leads to the viewpoint, from which both named landscape features can be seen. This gives the route a distinguishing feature beyond the circular route’s stated length.

Les Rochers des Parcs can be accessed from the car park beneath the viaduct and are part of the Espaces Naturels Sensibles (ENS) of the Calvados Department. The site has 120 climbing routes; this number may change as the area is managed. If the number of routes is important to your plans, check it again before your visit. This takes account of both the specific scale of the climbing offer and the fact that it can change.

The parish church of Saint-Laurent is in Le Vey; the GR® de Pays Tour passes it in the village. The church preserves 12th-century herringbone masonry and a narrow, round-arched window on the south side, but has been extensively altered. The combination of preserved architectural features and extensive changes gives its architectural history a specific connection to the village. Hikers will find this historic building, identified by name, directly on the described route.
