Pont-Farcy combines cycling routes along the Vire with water-based activities and a rich river history. There are different options to consider when planning your trip: a 55-kilometre Voie verte, a cycling route along minor roads, walking trails in the Gorges de la Vire, or trips on the river. The town’s history also includes a ford once used by pilgrims and the Pont Bailey on the towpath.

Cycling routes with different profiles

The towpath along the Vire is a 55 km Voie verte between Pont-Farcy and Saint-Fromond. La Vélomaritime runs from Pont-Farcy to Vire along minor roads through the Bocage Virois. These routes therefore differ both in the type of path and in their stated destinations: one is a Voie verte between two towns, while the other follows roads towards Vire. Another official cycling route leads from Pont-Farcy to the Viaduc de la Souleuvre near La Ferrière-Harang. If you choose one of these routes, check the latest route conditions in advance.

Stages and trails in the Gorges de la Vire

The seventh stage of the Rando des Haras nationaux runs from Bény-Bocage to Pont-Farcy over 22 km and is divided into two sections of 10 and 12 km. On another stage, from Condé-sur-Vire to Pont-Farcy, the route described follows the towpath along the Vire. This makes it possible to identify the first route by its total distance and division into sections, while the river’s course provides the specific route reference for the trail from Condé-sur-Vire.

Between Campeaux and Pont-Farcy, the Gorges de la Vire comprise wooded hills. The sunken lanes in this area are suitable for walking. If distance is your main consideration, the 22 km stage offers a specific reference; if you would rather plan around the scenery and walking trails, the Gorges are another point of reference.

River trips and activities at the lake

On the river routes, the Base des Gorges de la Vire offers a range of canoe trips and kayak tours; reservations are required. These are distinct from the activities at the lake at the Pont-Farcy campsite, where you can go pedal boating and stand-up paddleboarding. Availability is seasonal and may change. If you plan to go canoeing or kayaking, book in advance. You should also check the seasonal availability of the lake activities before your visit.

Ford, inland port, and Bailey bridge

Pont-Farcy’s history dates back to the Gallo-Roman period. The town was also a ford across the Vire, used, among others, by pilgrims travelling to Mont Saint-Michel. For a time, it was an important inland port under its historical name, Port-Farcy. These are different chapters in the town’s history: the Gallo-Roman period, the river crossing, and its former role as a port.

The Pont Bailey stands on the banks of the Vire near Pont-Farcy, along the towpath. The Bailey bridge was built from parts that had been used for the artificial harbour at Arromanches after 6 June 1944. If you plan to visit the bridge, check the site’s current status in advance.
