Le Breuil-en-Bessin offers three distinct points of interest for a trip: the Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, with building phases spanning several centuries; a fishing spot that has received a label; and a named road cycling route. This lets you weigh cultural history, fishing and cycling as separate priorities. At the church, the focus is on its building history and protected furnishings; by the water, on fish stocks and scenery; and on the bike, on a route with a specific length.
Church: building history and protected furnishings
The Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was built as early as the 12th century; its tower was added in the 15th century. The paving was changed in 1876. These details mark different stages: they relate to the church building, a part of the building added later, and an even later alteration to the floor. Anyone interested in historic architecture will find more here than a single date of construction. The dates show that the building and its alterations do not all belong to the same period.
Individual furnishings are also protected. The Christ on the Cross on a rood beam combines a polychrome wooden statue with a painted wrought-iron beam. Polychrome means decorated in several colors; here, a brightly colored wooden figure is paired with a painted iron beam. The protected processional cross, made of a copper alloy, dates from the 19th century. A sacristy cabinet dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries is also protected. These furnishings add their own materials and dates to the building’s history.
Plan d'eau: water and fishing
The Plan d'eau du Breuil-en-Bessin shifts the focus from building history to water, scenery and fishing. The body of water covers one hectare and received the “passion” label for the quality of its fish stocks and the scenic quality of the site. The award thus recognizes two aspects at once: the fish stocks and the quality of the landscape.
Angling targets cyprinids, especially carp, using pole, feeder and other techniques. Cyprinids are a group of fish that includes carp; the methods mentioned therefore differ in technique, while their target fish belong to the same group. Check local fishing regulations before your visit.
A road cycling route through the area
A route description updated on December 23, 2024, lists the 28 km road cycling route “Les Cyclo’ d’Isigny-Omaha,” which passes through Molay-Littry and Le Breuil-en-Bessin. The route offers a distinct planning consideration: the focus is on a named road cycling course with a specific total distance. This makes it different from the locally focused interests in the church and fishing waters. If you would like cycling to be a priority, you can consider the route as a separate option alongside building history and fishing.
Different questions therefore help determine your priorities: Are you interested in the sequence of historic building phases and protected works, the combination of fishing and scenery, or a named road route? At the church, the focus is on history; at the water, on fishing opportunities and regulations to check locally; and for cycling, on the route’s length. This lets you give the three themes separate weight in your travel plans.
