The old cemetery in Le Mesnil-Durand is shaded by a Lebanon cedar several centuries old. This tree makes a striking feature in the landscape and heritage setting. Churches and manor houses add historic architectural styles to the picture, ranging from a Romanesque choir to a 12th-century portal.
Churches and Architectural History
The church in Le Mesnil-Durand is listed as an “Inscrit” (registered historic monument). At the Church of Saint-André, two periods of construction stand out in the same building: the nave dates from the late 13th century, while the choir is Romanesque. This contrast gives the architecture a clear chronological structure.
On the south side of the choir is a 12th-century portal. It has an archivolt decorated with zigzag patterns and sculpted columns. The archivolt is the arch framing the portal; here, the zigzag motif is one of its specific decorative details. Inside, the choir is vaulted, while the nave has a flat ceiling with cross-shaped wooden profiles. The two parts of the building can therefore be compared through their different ceiling forms: a vault on one side and a flat ceiling on the other. The portal is older than the nave.
Manor Houses, Accommodation and Local Produce
At the Manoir du Verger, the dovecote, as well as the façades and roofs of the two adjoining outbuildings, were listed as historic monuments by decree dated 11 April 1975. A dovecote is a building for pigeons; the outbuildings point to another type of building on the estate.
The Gîte Le Pressoir at the Manoir de Pontallery is located in the manor’s former cider press. If you are considering this particular gîte, check current availability before your trip.
The Ferme de la Tuilerie produces farmhouse cider and also sells farmhouse apple juice. If you would like to include a purchase in your plans, check the latest information on production and sales before your trip.
A Hiking Route as an Alternative Focus
La fontaine du vent is a hiking route that starts in Le Mesnil-Durand, at the car park by the Church of Le Mesnil-Durand. This starting point is a useful reference for planning. Check the practical route information before setting out, as it may be updated in the future.
If you are mainly interested in architectural history, the churches and the Manoir du Verger offer different architectural details. The hiking route provides a different focus, while the Ferme de la Tuilerie offers a connection to agricultural produce. You can choose the themes that you would most like to shape your stay.
