A stay in Mézidon-Canon can be planned around three distinct cultural themes: the protected estate of Château de Canon, the civic architecture in Canon and the history of Sainte-Barbe. Park and garden grounds, a church built from Caen stone and 20th-century buildings sit alongside a medieval founding story.

Château de Canon: Estate and Visit Planning

The protected estate of Château de Canon has remained unchanged since the 18th century. The ensemble includes the park, charterhouses, a Chinese kiosk, the Temple of the Weeping and the so-called Target Fountain. The park and gardens feature a reflecting pool, a cascade, a grotto, a garden kiosk and a dovecote.

At the château, access and tour schedules are separate planning considerations. Visitor information dated August 20, 2026, stated that, due to construction work, only the kitchens, outbuildings, park and gardens were open for visits. The château’s ground floor was expected to reopen soon. Check current access arrangements before travelling.

The tourism information’s seasonal schedule lists one-hour guided tours of the château at 3:00 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. daily in July and August. Storytelling tours lasting 45 minutes are also listed on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Check the dates before travelling so you can coordinate your visit with the seasonal program.

Church and Civic Art Deco Architecture in Canon

The Église Saint Pierre du Breuil-Mézidon is built from Caen stone; its porch dates from the 15th century. The Jean-Jaurès School and Canon’s annex town hall were built in 1932 by the architects Wilkin. As a group of buildings, they are considered an emblematic example of Art Deco in civic architecture.

By decree of July 5, 2010, the façades and roofs of the Jean-Jaurès School and the annex town hall were classified as historic monuments. The church porch dates from the 15th century; the Jean-Jaurès School and Canon’s annex town hall were built in 1932.

Sainte-Barbe: Foundation, Priory and Tithe Barn

The first foundation at Sainte-Barbe is dated to around 1055. A priory was founded there in the 12th century to house the relics of the young martyr.

The tithe barn is now the only surviving building of the former abbey.
