Saonnet combines historic architecture with opportunities for outdoor activities. Château de Berné and the Church of Saint-Germain represent different aspects of the region’s heritage: a château with a distinctive dovecote and a church with Romanesque and early Gothic features. There is also a 28-kilometre circular cycling route through the village, a route between Saonnet and Rubercy, and a mobile provider of nature, leisure and water sports activities. You can therefore choose whether to focus your trip on architectural history, routes or activities.
The dovecote at Château de Berné
Château de Berné is located in Saonnet and was built under Louis XIII. Its dovecote was listed as a historic monument by decree of 14 December 2000. The cylindrical structure has a diameter of nine metres, is made of rammed earth and is limewashed inside. It contains 1,200 nesting holes on two levels. The roof structure includes a central post, and the dovecote also has a rotating ladder. It is the only surviving dovecote made of rammed earth in Lower Normandy and is located in the Parc naturel régional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin.
These features offer different points of reference for understanding the building’s history: its diameter and cylindrical shape describe the outer form, while the rammed earth and limewash describe its material and surface. The nesting holes on two levels, along with the post and rotating ladder, make its internal and structural layout clear. Alongside the château itself, a clearly defined architectural feature takes centre stage, one that also has a distinctive regional context.
Church of Saint-Germain: Romanesque and early Gothic details
The Church of Saint-Germain retains a relatively well-preserved Romanesque choir. The tower has preserved vaults from the 12th century, and the sanctuary contains two early Gothic piscinae. The stained-glass window is titled “Christ au Sacré-Coeur” and complements the church’s architectural details.
The choice of cultural focus is clear: at the château, it is the dovecote and its rammed-earth construction; at Saint-Germain, it is the features found in different parts of the church and their stated stylistic classifications. The church therefore offers a different architectural point of reference from the standalone dovecote.
