The pointed-arch entrance to the Église Saint-Martin offers a tangible clue to Gonneville-Sur-Honfleur’s building history: it replaced an earlier Romanesque doorway. The cultural picture also includes damaged medieval wall paintings and the Manoir du Désert; the Côte de Grâce, meanwhile, is a protected area that covers the entire commune. This gives visitors different themes to focus on when planning their stay: heritage, landscape, the greenway and the production of Calvados at the Domaine de la Pommeraie. If you are looking for hotels in Gonneville-Sur-Honfleur, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Église Saint-Martin and Manoir du Désert

On the façade of the Église Saint-Martin, a pointed-arch doorway replaced an earlier Romanesque doorway. “Pointed-arch” describes the shape of the current arch; “Romanesque” classifies its predecessor as belonging to a different architectural style. The church has been listed as a Monument historique since 1933. The specific change in the doorway’s design and its protected status, in place since 1933, thus stand side by side.

Heavily damaged wall paintings are still visible in the southern part of the nave. They depict Baudouin de Condé’s “Dit des trois morts et des trois vifs” and are dated to approximately 1450–1480. The French title means “The Tale of the Three Dead and the Three Living” and names the subject of the images. The date places the paintings in the 15th century. Together with the façade detail, they offer a second way to explore the Église Saint-Martin: medieval art in the nave.

The Manoir du Désert is a historic building in the commune protected as a Monument historique. It was built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries on commission from the Le Danois brothers. Compared with the wall paintings, dated to approximately 1450–1480, the manor represents a later building period, on the threshold of the 16th century. The two buildings therefore reflect different historical periods.

Protected landscape and greenway

The protected Côte de Grâce area covers the entire commune of Gonneville-Sur-Honfleur. Its geographical scale therefore differs from that of individual buildings: landscape protection applies to the commune as a whole. If you want to consider the landscape as well as the architecture when choosing a destination, you can take this commune-wide perspective into account separately.

A municipal notice dated April 2, 2025, confirmed that the section of the greenway between Rue des Écureuils and the centre of Gonneville-Sur-Honfleur was open. The greenway to Gonneville is reserved for cyclists and pedestrians; cars and trucks are prohibited. Check the latest conditions before setting out.

Calvados and a visit to the Domaine de la Pommeraie

At the Domaine de la Pommeraie, the focus is on production rather than building history. A visit explains how cider brandy is made into Calvados and aged in the cellars. The visit to the cellar rooms is followed by a tasting of the products offered there. This sequence combines an explanation of the production process and cellar ageing with a tasting afterwards, offering a different focus from the town’s architectural and artistic history. Visiting and tasting arrangements may change. The Domaine is accessible to people with reduced mobility; confirm the specific arrangements in advance.
