The hilly commune of Crouay extends partly across the Massif Armoricain and partly across the Paris Basin. This offers several perspectives for your stay: rural landscapes, a named walking route, and architectural and religious heritage. Each of these themes can shape a trip in its own way.

Landscape and geological heritage

The rural landscape includes enclosed pastures, farmland, woodland, marshes and a river fed by groundwater. Together with the hilly terrain, these features offer a broad perspective on Crouay. The geological setting is also part of the picture: the commune extends across two distinct geological regions, the Massif Armoricain and the Paris Basin.

The “Sinémurien et fours à chaux de Crouay” site comprises scattered, partly infilled former quarries that supplied lime kilns. Some of these kilns are well preserved. In the former quarries, layers of Sinemurian marl-limestone are exposed over a height of about ten metres. Here, geological and historical perspectives come together: the rock layers form part of the geological heritage, while the lime kilns recall the former use of the quarry area.

Hiking and a dated event

The Circuit des Chaufourniers is a 12 km walking route in Crouay. Its length gives the hiking option a clearly defined scope as you consider whether walking should be the focus of your trip. The circuit can therefore be considered as a distinct theme alongside the landscape and the former quarry area.

A trail event called Trail des Mémoires is listed in Crouay for 11 April 2027. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the event date and registration details before travelling.

Architectural and religious heritage

Crouay’s architectural heritage includes houses with character. The Église de Crouay contains an octagonal stone font dating from the first half of the 15th century. Its shape, material and date make it a tangible reminder of local history. The church also houses an equestrian statue of Saint Martin, made of polychromed and gilded wood. Polychromed describes its colourful finish; gilding adds to the surface. While the font stands out for its shape and date, the statue is notable for its subject, material and workmanship.

Crouay’s cemetery contains a so-called Hosannière cross, associated with Palm Sunday processions. The religious heritage is thus found in both the church and the cemetery; the architectural heritage also extends beyond individual objects to include the houses with character. If you are weighing up a walking trip against a stay focused more on cultural history, the 12 km circuit and these varied heritage features offer distinct, concrete points of interest.
