Saint-Omer brings together significant buildings and art, gardens, a historic riverside walk and cultural venues with different visiting arrangements. When planning your visit, it is therefore important to consider not only what you would like to see, but also whether you can visit independently, with a guide or only at certain times.

Cathedral, Abbey and City History

Cathédrale Notre-Dame was added to the first list of French Monuments historiques in 1840. Its furnishings include an astronomical clock dating from 1558, an 18th-century organ case, and works by Lebrun and Rubens. You can visit the cathedral independently or with a guide from the Pays d’art et d’histoire. Access may vary during services or events.

At the foot of the cathedral, the Maison du Patrimoine uses a playful, immersive exhibition design to explore the architecture, heritage conservation, urban planning and landscapes of the Pays d’art et d’histoire de Saint-Omer. The ground-floor exhibition also covers the geology, geography and landscapes of the area, tracing its history from prehistoric times to the 20th century. The focus here is therefore not on individual works of art, but on the region’s development and design.

The Abbey of Saint-Bertin is also one of the city’s important historical landmarks: it was founded in the 7th century by Omer and his companions Momelin, Ebertram and Bertin. The layout of the park gives an idea of its original size. Église Saint-Denis lies halfway between the abbey and the cathedral. It stands on the former processional route, now called Rue Saint-Bertin.

Museums and Cultural Venues with Their Own Visiting Arrangements

The Musée Sandelin is housed in an urban mansion dating from the late 18th century and has one of the most important collections of medieval art in northern France. It offers an extensive year-round program of exhibitions, talks, workshops and games; program details may change. The venue thus combines a historic setting with a changing cultural program.

At the Chapelle des Jésuites, architectural history meets contemporary use: it was built between 1615 and 1640 and restored between 2013 and 2016. Today it serves as a venue for exhibitions, concerts and seminars. Access is limited to periods when exhibitions are on; guided tours are occasionally offered. Check the latest access arrangements before your visit.

MAC – Le Moulin à Café hosts performances and guided tours throughout the year, by prior reservation. It is also home to an Italian-style theatre, restored between 2016 and 2018. As the program and reservation requirements may change, it is worth checking them before your trip. The Motte Castrale offers a different perspective on the past: it was converted into a military prison in the 18th century. It is open only during festivals, special events and some guided tours of the historic center.

The historic hall of the Bibliothèque d’Agglomération du Pays de Saint-Omer is open to the public. It houses more than 35,000 old volumes, including one copy each of the Gutenberg Bible and Shakespeare’s First Folio. Access details may change, so check the current arrangements before your visit.

Gardens and Waterside Routes

The Jardin Public brings together a formal garden, an English landscape park, an arboretum and a conservatory of Vauban fortifications. You can explore the garden independently using the free “Walls and Gardens” app; guided tours with a guide from the Pays d’art et d’histoire are also offered regularly. Tour dates may change. The park offers a different focus from the city’s collections and buildings: here, the emphasis is on different types of gardens and the history of fortifications.

The “Au fil de l’eau” walking route leads from the former Port au lait battu along the rivers and various quays of Saint-Omer. River trade at these quays helped the city rise to prominence. Those interested in the city’s history can follow a different thread here than at its religious buildings: the focus is not on foundations and furnishings, but on waterways, quays and trade.
