When deciding whether Meurchin is a good fit for a trip, three different highlights are especially important: EuroVelo 5, the green spaces and waterways of Parc de la Briquette, and the Médiathèque l’Artchipel. They range from a waterside route to outdoor activities and a cultural institution. Which of these you want to shape your stay is a practical starting point for your planning.
Waterside route, park and activities
EuroVelo 5 runs from Pont-à-Vendin through Meurchin towards Wingles, following the waterside route. If cycling is the focus of your trip, you can consider Meurchin a stop along this route. Cycling is also possible in Parc de la Briquette, as are walks and fishing, sometimes at night. The difference can help with planning your day: EuroVelo 5 is the route-based option; the park offers a choice of activities in one place: walking, cycling and fishing.
The green spaces and waterways of Parc de la Briquette are open year-round without restrictions. An exception to this rule applies to the La Briquette area during hunting season. Check local notices about the hunting season before your visit.
Another place for physical activity is the pump track. A municipal bulletin reported that it was open from the summer period of 2024; at its inauguration, it was used by people with scooters, bicycles and kick scooters. Check its current status in advance of your visit.
Culture at the Médiathèque l’Artchipel
The Médiathèque l’Artchipel brings together a range of cultural offerings: it includes a media library, a multipurpose hall with a dance school, a music school, visual arts workshops, and a multimedia and games area. This makes it a cultural highlight alongside planning around the route or park. Admission for individual visitors is free for Meurchin residents and visitors from elsewhere alike; check the current pricing information before your visit.
The Médiathèque is open Tuesdays from 14:00 to 18:00, Wednesdays from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 13:30 to 18:00, Thursdays from 14:00 to 17:00, Fridays from 14:00 to 18:00, and Saturdays from 9:00 to 13:00. This schedule can help you choose a day to visit: on Wednesdays, there are two time slots with a break between 12:30 and 13:30; on Saturdays, opening hours are in the morning. The listed hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays begin in the afternoon. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Landscape context and transport
Meurchin also has a broader cultural-landscape connection: the municipality includes the edge of the buffer zone of the UNESCO-protected property “Paysage et ensemble miniers d’Auchy-les-Mines à Lens”. This designation adds a broader landscape perspective to the individual leisure activities and connects Meurchin with the mining landscape associated with the protected property.
The TADAO service is also relevant for getting around the area: from 1 January 2026, visitors can use the buses for free without a ticket or subscription. This makes planning easier if you want to use the buses. Check the rules when planning your trip in case of subsequent changes.
