The Lys flows through the Porte de Beaulieu, which is also the last surviving remnant of Aire-sur-la-Lys’s fortifications. The combination of the river and historic structure adds a distinctive detail, while the belfry, Collégiale and Chapelle offer further cultural highlights. Boat trips and various excursions also depart from the port. When planning your trip, you can consider culture, time on the water and a seasonal event date as separate priorities.

Belfry and historic buildings

The belfry of Aire-sur-la-Lys has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. It has a carillon of 14 bells and seven floors. The climb to the campanile involves 236 steps. If you plan to make the climb, check visitor information before your trip. The number of steps is a practical point to consider when including the belfry in your day’s plans.

The Porte de Beaulieu also brings together two aspects of the town’s history: it is the last surviving remnant of the fortifications, and the Lys flows through the structure. This historic site is therefore distinct from the belfry’s vertical and architectural features.

Orientation and sacred art

The Chapelle Beaudelle is a tourist interpretation centre for Aire-sur-la-Lys’s heritage. Two interactive tables use a map system to present around fifty attractions arranged by theme, each with a detailed description. The thematic organisation offers a way to explore different aspects of local culture. The chapel also displays part of a replica of a relief map depicting Aire-sur-la-Lys and its fortifications in 1745.

The Collégiale Saint-Pierre houses a 17th-century organ case from Clairmarais Abbey. It also contains a statue of Notre-Dame Panetière, regarded as the town’s patron saint. The organ case and statue add their own historical, artistic and religious dimensions alongside the fortifications and relief map.

Boat trips and excursions from the port

La Croisière Merveilleuse departs from the port of Aire-sur-la-Lys. You can choose between a trip on a river yacht and a meal on the water. Departure times and availability may vary; check the timetable and options before your trip. This will help you decide whether the boat trip itself or dining on board is the main focus of your plans.

Near the port, the EuroVelo 5 greenway runs for several kilometres along the Lys. You can also take half-day or full-day excursions from the port on a vintage bicycle, an electric scooter or a tandem. Excursions vary by duration and vehicle; availability may vary. Check in advance which options are available for your dates. Choosing between a half-day and a full-day trip helps you fit the excursion into your travel plans.

A local tradition in September

The Fête de l’Andouille takes place on the first Sunday in September. The tradition includes throwing andouilles from the bretèche of the Bailliage. If you want to time your trip to coincide with this date, check that year’s programme in advance. This lets you include the event in your travel dates without confusing it with the architectural and cultural highlights that can be enjoyed year-round.
