Le Cateau-Cambrésis can be explored through three distinct discoveries: art and architectural history, ecological waterways, and a park with a clearly dated history. There is also a one-hour brewery tour as a compact activity. When planning a stay, you can choose between cultural interests and time outdoors rather than trying to fit every interest into a single focus.

Art, Architecture and History

The Musée départemental Henri Matisse houses an Auguste Herbin collection of 92 works. Art lovers will find a clearly defined collection focus here. The Église Saint-Martin offers a different historical perspective: it is the only surviving remnant of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-André. It is also an example of the Mannerist art introduced from Italy, which flourished in the 17th century. Its brightly coloured stained-glass windows, dating from 1932 to 1934, are inspired by Cubism. The collection and Saint-Martin raise different questions: the former centres on an artist’s body of work; at the church, the abbey connection, Mannerist classification and later windows come together. Those sorting out their art interests can therefore distinguish between a collection and the art history of a building. The church windows date significantly later than the period in which Mannerist art flourished, the 17th century. This comparison keeps two art-historical reference points distinct rather than assigning them to the same period.

A River and a Pond with Different Focuses

The waterways also offer two different perspectives. The Selle flows through Le Cateau-Cambrésis and is a first-category river. It enables wild fish, including brown trout, to reproduce naturally; its biodiversity gives it the status of a biological reservoir. The Étang des Essarts offers a different focus: the 7,000 m² pond is supplied by a solar-powered pump and is used for recreation and walking. At the same time, it is a refuge for biodiversity. By comparison, the Selle’s ecological function as a flowing waterway takes centre stage, while the Étang combines a place for walks with a refuge.

A Park with a Dated History

Parc Fénelon adds a dated history as a public space to the nature theme. The town acquired it in 1882; it opened to the public on 12 January 1884. These dates mark two separate steps—the town’s acquisition and the park’s subsequent opening to the public. As well as its place in the nature theme, the park thus offers a specific, dated connection to the town’s history.

Brewery Tour and Festival Tradition

As an additional activity, Brasserie VIVAT offers a one-hour tour for €9 per person. The price includes a tasting of a 25 cl glass of VIVAT Blonde. As schedules may change, it is advisable to check the current tour schedule before visiting. The large Foire du Saint-Matthieu offers a very different focus: it is a major festival that continues to this day, bringing together two agricultural regions and promoting local trade. Unlike the art and nature themes, the focus here is on the connection between agriculture and regional economic life.
