Renescure brings together a clearly defined village centre and architectural and wartime history, each offering a different way to explore the place. At Place de Renescure, you can put the historic significance of the village centre into context; the Church of the Assumption of Mary and the so-called Château dit de Philippe de Comines draw attention to protected buildings. The Village Patrimoine walking route adds another perspective with multilingual information panels. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on architecture, village history or the V1 heritage.

Village centre and protected architecture

Place de Renescure is considered the birthplace of the village and remains its centre to this day. It serves as a point of reference when putting the place’s different cultural and historical themes into context: alongside the village centre, ecclesiastical art and surviving parts of the Château are among the notable aspects of its history.

In the Church of the Assumption of Mary, the organ loft is protected as a movable cultural asset; it was listed on 9 June 1980. The oak wood, loft and openwork balustrade form a unified ensemble. If you are interested in historic interiors, this is a tangible example of how individual architectural elements can work together.

The so-called Château dit de Philippe de Comines also makes its own distinctive contribution. The surviving parts, including the curtain wall, have been partially protected as a historic monument since 23 April 1981. Together, the organ loft and the Château offer two different perspectives on the heritage: movable furnishings in the church and protected architectural parts of a historic ensemble.

Walking routes and practical planning

Renescure has a “Village Patrimoine” walking route. It is 3.5 km long and features information panels in French, English and Dutch. The stated route length gives you a concrete guide for planning your day; you can allow time to read the panels according to your own interests.

Local guides can accompany visitors by prior appointment. If personal explanations are important to you, arrange a time before your trip. You can then plan the walk either using the multilingual panels or with a guide booked in advance.

The “Du Château à la Forêt” trail starts at the car park at Castle Zuthove in Renescure. Check the parking conditions before you set off. The two options differ mainly in their practical requirements: a guide for the Village Patrimoine walk must be booked in advance, while for “Du Château à la Forêt” you should check the conditions at the starting car park.

V1 heritage and planning your journey

The V1 storage site adds another dimension to the history of the place. A complete site extended from and was connected to Renescure railway station. In the area around the site, a paved road and numerous bunkers are scattered across nearby pastureland. The individual protected buildings thus sit within a history that spans the railway station, the site and other features of the landscape.

Routes 127 and 129 operate on the Arc-en-Ciel 1 bus network. If you are planning a bus journey, check the current timetable and the best connection before you travel.
