Explore Gravelines through its star-shaped fortifications, maritime history and water activities. The Chemin de ronde is a circular trail around the fortifications; the Beffroi and Phare each offer a viewpoint. Two hiking options, at three and nine kilometres respectively, offer different focuses. Choose between a trail to monuments and gardens and a route through several landscapes, or include water activities and culture in your plans.
Explore the fortifications on foot and from above
The Chemin de ronde offers walkers a circular trail around Gravelines’ star-shaped fortifications. The Beffroi offers a different perspective: the tower dates from the 19th century, stands 27 metres tall and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005. The visit concludes with a 360-degree view of the fortified town and its surroundings. These offer two distinct ways to experience the town’s fortifications: a trail around them and a panorama at the end of a visit to the Beffroi.
Two hiking trails, two different routes
The “De Vauban aux Islandais” circular hiking trail is nine kilometres long. It follows the river, crosses a beach and passes through polders and along the green belt around the fortified town. The “Forteresse Maritime” route is three kilometres long and leads to monuments and gardens in the fortified town. The routes differ both in length and in their stated destinations: the longer trail links several landscapes, while the shorter one focuses on monuments and gardens. If you’re planning time outdoors, these details offer a concrete comparison without implying that the two routes are alike.
Activities on the water and on land
The PAarc des Rives de l’Aa offers water-based and landscape-related activities. Instruction is available in rowing, indoor rowing, kayaking, dragon boating and canoeing, as well as mountain biking, biathlon, combined disciplines, roller sports and orienteering. The range therefore includes both water-based activities and various other forms of exercise. The individual activities on offer and their schedules may vary; take this into account when planning.
The Embarcadère Vauban Promenade offers another way to experience the waterways: at the fortifications, which are completely surrounded by water, you can take self-guided trips in rowboats, pedal boats or electric boats. Operating periods and prices may vary. Check the latest information beforehand if you’re planning a trip. The boat types offer a clear choice based on the type of vessel, while the hiking trails can be distinguished by their length and their landscapes or destinations.
Maritime heritage and printmaking
The Phare de Gravelines houses an exhibition on the history of maritime heritage. Visitors can climb 116 steps and enjoy the view of Gravelines. Access is regulated and may vary by season; check the current visitor information before your visit. The lighthouse’s history can also be placed in context: it illuminated the shipping channel from 1843 to 1979 and has been listed as a Monument historique since 2010.
The Musée du dessin et de l’estampe originale offers a different cultural perspective. It introduces all visitor groups to printmaking techniques; specific programme details may vary. The two venues thus have different focuses: the Phare centres on maritime heritage and views, while the museum focuses on printmaking. When planning, consider which of these subjects you’d like to explore further.
