Feignies combines a several-hour walking route with military history and a striking architectural detail. The Circuit du Bois de la Taillette passes Fort de Leveau; there are also the Musée du Fort de Leveau and the Memorial Patton. An ensemble featuring an Art Deco central pavilion and a playground on the Coulée verte offer further points of interest. When planning your stay, it helps to distinguish between a route with a stated distance, historical themes and an activity for children.
The Circuit du Bois de la Taillette
The circuit starts at the Esplanade in Feignies, opposite the Espace Gérard Philippe. The municipal route leaflet gives the shorter option as 12.5 kilometres, taking four hours. This makes it possible to classify the route as a several-hour outing and take it into account when planning your day. It passes Fort de Leveau and invites you to explore the fort. This combines exercise with a historical point of interest. If the fort is a particular focus for you, allow extra time beyond the stated route duration.
Military history and the Memorial Patton
Fort de Leveau was built between 1882 and 1884 as part of General Séré de Rivières’ fortification plan. The Musée du Fort de Leveau in Feignies presents the region’s military history, including both world wars. The Memorial Patton offers a different perspective: using documents donated by his family, it presents the life and career of William Patton. The memorial also includes aircraft parts recovered from the crash site in La Longueville in February 2001. This brings two different perspectives together: regional military history at the museum and an individual-focused account at the memorial.
An ensemble with an Art Deco detail
The ensemble “Bains douches, école primaire et poste, actuellement école primaire Marie-Curie” was first designed in 1928 by architect Adolphe Danis. Its name refers to baths, a primary school and a post office, while also noting its current name, école primaire Marie-Curie. At the corner of Rue de la République and Rue Alfred-Derkenne, the former post office connects with the former bathing facility on Rue Alfred-Derkenne. The central pavilion is designed in the Art Deco style. A central pavilion is the middle section of a building that projects from the façade. This detail offers a concrete architectural way to appreciate the ensemble, whose name brings together several public functions.
Playground on the Coulée verte
A playground opened on the Coulée verte in summer 2024. It is intended for children aged two to six and six to eleven. An inclusive piece of play equipment has a dedicated entrance for people with reduced mobility; children must be supervised by their parents. The age groups provide practical guidance when planning with children, and parental supervision is also required. If you plan to visit the playground, check access on site before relying on it.
