Varennes offers several specific options for a stay: churches, a panorama in Puylauron and opportunities for outdoor activities. The Church of Sainte-Germaine stands in the village centre, opposite the town hall. In Puylauron, within the municipality of Varennes, you’ll find the Chapel of Notre-Dame des Anges and a viewpoint. When choosing between culture, scenery and activities, two differences are particularly useful: the chapel’s feast day and the clearly specified cycling loops.
Churches and feast day
The Church of Sainte-Germaine is easy to locate in the village centre: it stands opposite the town hall. The Chapel of Notre-Dame des Anges, by contrast, is in Puylauron, high up on the hills. The two churches therefore differ both in location and in their relationship to the surrounding area.
The feast of Notre-Dame des Anges is celebrated on 2 August. If you’d like to take this date into account when planning your trip, it provides a specific point of reference for your stay. The chapel thus links a clearly identifiable location in Puylauron with a set date, while Sainte-Germaine is distinguished by its central location opposite the town hall.
Panoramas, hiking and picnics
The Puylauron viewpoint is freely accessible all year round and offers a 360-degree panorama. You can see forests, grain fields, hills and small wooded areas. The landscape is therefore not just one type of scenery: fields and open ridges sit alongside wooded areas. The viewpoint is also listed as an outdoor activity and a hiking trail.
For a break, Varennes has two picnic areas, each with different landmarks. One is in the hamlet of Puylauron, at the starting point of the hike. The second is behind the village hall and has a children’s playground and a multi-sports court. The Puylauron picnic area can thus be identified by its location at the trailhead, while the area behind the village hall is distinguished by the two facilities mentioned.
Cycling loops and geocaching
The “Circuit du Tarn et ses coteaux” offers two cycling loops. The longer one is 17 kilometres long, is listed as taking 1 hour 10 minutes and is rated difficult. The 12-kilometre loop is listed as taking 45 minutes and is rated easy. In direct comparison, the second loop is five kilometres shorter and its stated duration is 25 minutes less. The difficulty rating also differs. Distance, stated duration and difficulty therefore offer different points of reference when choosing a route. The Church of Varennes is also listed as a possible starting point for the cycling route.
The circuit passes through landscapes shaped by the River Tarn and offers a choice between valley and hill scenery. The type of landscape is therefore another point of comparison alongside route length. The “Rallye des insolites” offers a different format: geocaching takes place year-round in 2026, including in Varennes. In the wider area, the rally combines elements of orienteering with a treasure hunt; a smartphone is used to discover unusual places. Alongside the cycling loops described by distance and difficulty, this offers another way to explore, as does the viewpoint.
