Montaigu-de-Quercy offers two very different highlights: the historic centre, with traces of the former château, and leisure by the water. A weekly market and wine tastings add to the town’s appeal, with activities available on Saturdays. You can focus your stay on architectural history, a visit to the market or outdoor activities; for events scheduled at specific times, it is worth checking the relevant date.

Church, heritage trail and traces of the château

The Church of Saint-Michel and Place de l’Hôtel de Ville form the historic centre of Montaigu-de-Quercy. The church’s present-day bell tower was built in 1855; in 1892, Saint-Michel was extended according to plans by the Toulouse architect Bréfeil. These dates refer to different construction details: the building of the tower and the later extension of the church. They help place two phases in the history of the central landmark.

The heritage trail leads past white stone houses, some of which have their date of construction in a cartouche. A cartouche is a framed panel on a façade. Where it bears a construction date, it gives the individual house a specific historical context. These features of the façades complement the church’s architectural history with smaller details along the trail.

Another historical trace is the former Château de Montaigu. It was destroyed by the English in 1418 during the Hundred Years’ War; today, only a few fortification walls remain. The town’s heritage is thus visible in different forms: at the church, through details about its construction and extension; and at the château, through the recorded account of its destruction and the walls that remain.

Montaigu-de-Quercy’s heritage can be visited individually, free of charge, all year round. This lets you plan your visit at your own pace rather than around a specific group tour.

Leisure by the water

The leisure area at Plan d’eau des Chênes is just a few steps from the historic centre. It offers opportunities to enjoy nature, swim and take part in outdoor activities. Its short distance from the centre makes it easy to plan your stay around different interests: architecture and local history on the one hand, relaxation and outdoor activities on the other.

Lac des ChĂŞnes in Montaigu-de-Quercy has a supervised beach. Its seasonal operation may change; before visiting, check whether lifeguard supervision is available on your chosen date.

Saturday market and wine tasting

Montaigu-de-Quercy’s weekly market takes place every Saturday morning in the central square. In 2026, the Cave des Domaine d’Arcadie in Montaigu-de-Quercy will offer wine tastings every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This gives you two different options for Saturday: a visit to the market in the central square and a tasting at the Cave during a clearly defined time slot. The market date may change; the 2026 tasting schedule is also subject to change. Check both dates if you plan to include them in your trip.
