In Lauzerte, medieval townscapes meet paths through narrow streets and countryside. The Place des Cornières and the viewpoints give your visit a cultural and scenic focus; the GR 65 also passes through the town. Depending on your interests, you can make architectural history, walks and seasonal events the focus of your trip.

Medieval squares and listed buildings

The Place des Cornières is a medieval square with façades dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Its arcades are considered typical of the bastides of southwestern France. Lauzerte is one of the “Plus Beaux Villages de France”; the square is also home to a ceramic work by artist Jacques Buchholtz. It was installed during the restoration of the square in the late 1980s.

The Église Saint-Barthélémy is another point of interest for architecture enthusiasts: it was classified as a Monument historique by decree on 6 October 1976. The Chapelle Saint-Sernin-du-Bosc offers a different historical perspective. Dating from the 11th century, it features Romanesque architecture and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1995.

Views and walks

The medieval town overlooks the valleys of the Petite Barguelonne and the Lendou. From Lauzerte’s viewpoints, you can look out over the surrounding countryside, whose appearance also changes throughout the year. If you’d like to combine your stay with a walk, the Promenade de l'eau et des fontaine offers an easy 3.5-kilometre route through the medieval streets. It passes fountains, the river and natural scenery.

A 700-metre section of the promenade runs alongside the Barguelonne. The route also leads to the Fontaine de Frescatis in a green setting. It therefore links a walk through the town with a stretch along the river and a visit to the fountain.

For independent exploration, Lauzerte has five tours available through the Baludik app. They let you explore the town at your own pace, and all the clues are outdoors. The number and format of the tours may change, so check in advance which options are currently available.

Pilgrim traditions, a chapel and a museum

Every summer, Lauzerte celebrates Saint James at the Chapelle Saint-Sernin-du-Bosc. The programme includes a hike on the GR 65 from Lauzerte to the chapel. If you’d like to experience this tradition, check the specific event dates and programme details before your trip. The chapel is open year-round and free to enter; confirm access locally again before your visit.

The Musée du patrimoine de Lauzerte offers a glimpse into the town’s past ways of life. Exhibits include a reconstructed classroom and kitchen from 1920 to 1950, as well as 26 models of stone dovecotes. Photographs of Lauzerte dating from 1885, traditional crafts and agricultural work provide further context. Displays may change; check the latest visitor information and exhibitions before your visit.

A seasonal evening in the square

The Jeudis Gourmands take place in the square every Thursday in July and August from 7 to 11 p.m. There, you can sample culinary specialities alongside producers, restaurateurs and caterers. This seasonal offering combines a visit to Lauzerte with regional cuisine and gatherings around the square. Check the event dates and schedule before your trip to see whether this seasonal event fits your plans.
