Labastide-Murat combines an unusual architectural history with trails suited to a wide range of time budgets. Construction of the Château de Labastide-Murat, founded by Joachim Murat, began in 1807 and was definitively halted in 1815. Other highlights include the Musée Murat, local Circuits de bourg and routes ranging from a 5 km trail to longer stages. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to specific interests, balancing history and activity.

Château and Musée Murat

The château’s neoclassical style is rare in the Quercy. Neoclassical describes a style inspired by classical architecture; this particular expression is rare in the Quercy. This makes the architecture a distinctive theme in the history of the area. At the Musée Murat, the focus shifts from architectural history to biography and domestic culture: the house is one of the few surviving birthplaces of a Marshal of France and has preserved a typical Quercy house, with its characteristic furnishings, for 200 years. The Musée Murat holds the French Ministry of Culture’s « Maison des illustres » label. It presents the original setting of Joachim Murat’s rise: a child from the area who became a Marshal of the Empire and King of Naples. The history of a building project and the story of an individual life thus offer two distinct historical perspectives.

Circuits de bourg and getting your bearings locally

The local Circuits de bourg convey the identity of this land in the heart of the Causses du Quercy through its history, anecdotes and notable figures. To help you get your bearings, the tourist office in Labastide-Murat provides brochures and information materials for visitors to take freely, including information on hikes, village walks, sights in the Lot and outdoor activities. This gives you ideas to suit different interests, from local history to outdoor pursuits.

Trails of varying lengths

The Promenade du Roy is 5 km long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. It is suitable for hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders. Trails lead from the village of Labastide-Murat to the hamlet of Goudou. The Promenade passes Lac de Boutanes and then offers views across the Causse.

The La Boucle des Crêtes cycling loop covers 32 km, takes about three hours and is of moderate difficulty. Compared with the Promenade du Roy, it is more than six times as long; the stated durations are about three hours and one and a half hours, respectively. It passes through Labastide-Murat, where churches, châteaux and other fortified houses shape the built landscape along the route.

For longer-distance hikes, consider the GR 46 variant from Rocamadour to Cahors. The stage from Rocamadour to Labastide-Murat covers 25 km; the next stage runs for another 25 km from Labastide-Murat to Vers. Labastide-Murat is therefore the destination of one stage and the starting point of the next. Compared with the 5 km Promenade, each stage is five times as long—a clear difference between a local trail and a longer hiking route.
