Eup offers a range of ways to explore: the extensive PR / Pic du Gar route, a Gallo-Roman artefact in the Église Saint-Michel, a special connection to the Garonne and the Brandon tradition at the summer solstice. When planning, it helps to distinguish between a full day of hiking and cultural or landscape themes that shape your stay in other ways. Decide whether the route should be the focus of your trip, or whether you would rather get to know Eup through its heritage, river landscape and customs.

Hiking: time required and starting point

The PR / Pic du Gar route runs through the area around Bezins-Garraux, Eup and Boutx. Depending on the starting point, it is around 13.8 to 17.5 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of 1,500 to 1,800 metres and a duration of approximately 7.5 to 9 hours. The starting point therefore affects not only the distance, but also the elevation gain and time required. Set aside a large part of the day for the hike and decide in advance which starting point your plan is based on. Check the specific route details locally before setting off.

Gallo-Roman artefact in the Église Saint-Michel

The Église Saint-Michel in Eup houses a Gallo-Roman funerary urn basin. This movable object has been protected since 6 December 2010. Eup therefore offers a clearly defined archaeological theme alongside the longer hiking option. Unlike the route, the cultural interest here centres on a single object and its Gallo-Roman connection; its dated protection status gives the subject a precise historical context.

The Garonne, landscape and geology

The ZNIEFF site “La Garonne de la frontière franco-espagnole jusqu'à Montréjeau” includes the riverbed of the Garonne, wooded riverbanks and adjacent rock formations. It extends from the French-Spanish border to Montréjeau and includes Eup. Near Eup, ophite rock deposits at Pouy du Calvaire obstruct the flow of the Garonne. These two natural features complement each other on different levels: the site describes the river landscape over a long stretch, while the ophite deposits identify a specific geological feature at Pouy du Calvaire.

The Brandon at the summer solstice

The Brandon in Eup is a Midsummer bonfire tradition celebrated at the summer solstice. Large logs, prepared on site, are set alight at night. Alongside the protected archaeological object, this tradition offers a different cultural connection: a custom with a specific event date. The date given for 2026 is 4 July; if travelling in later years, check the event dates again.

Accommodation in Eup

The holiday cottage “La Roseraie” is in the small commune of Eup, below the Grotte du Mail du Faucon and at the foot of Pic du Gar. This location description identifies a specific place to stay and two local landmarks. Check the accommodation details and amenities again before booking.

Hiking trails in the wider region

There are just under 200 kilometres of waymarked trails in the Saint-Béat area, which is crossed by the GR 10 and GR 86. This adds a regional perspective to the individual PR / Pic du Gar route: here, the focus is on a network of trails; there, on a route whose length, elevation gain and duration depend on the starting point.
