Historic buildings, green spaces and walking trails give Mondonville a variety of attractions. Parc de la Tuilerie offers a place to take a break, while the PR20 is an 18.5-kilometre hike leading to Bouconne Forest. When choosing accommodation, you might consider whether you’d like to focus mainly on the town’s history, nature along the Gajea or a longer hike. The sights and activities can be viewed as different focal points for your stay.

Cultural history between the tower and the church

The Parcours patrimonial has an adapted version for visitors with reduced mobility. When it was inaugurated in September 2022, the route was presented as a family-friendly, educational walking trail with seven information panels at notable sites around the town. The panels and educational approach give it a cultural and historical focus.

One distinctive building is the hexagonal Tour de l’Horloge. It was built between 1844 and 1852 from pebbles and hand-cut red bricks. Two towers remain from the medieval Château de la Tour, marking the fortified entrance. A well with a diameter of 2.2 metres still stands in the former castle courtyard.

The church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens also offers a variety of details to explore: some Romanesque elements from the original structure remain in the wall beside the churchyard. In front of the church stands a statue of Our Lady of the Fields, created by J. Lefèvre in 1875. The Pigeonnier, meanwhile, has a traditional “en pied de mulet” roof, with access holes for pigeons.

Green spaces and nature along the Gajea

Parc de la Tuilerie covers two hectares, with the Gajea stream winding through it. Shaded benches, picnic tables and children’s play areas offer different ways to take a break. The park is home to around 60 tree species—a figure that gives an approximate sense of its diversity.

The Le Gajea walk passes through a blue corridor that provides a habitat for species associated with water. Kingfishers and wagtails hunt for fish and insects in the clear waters. For anyone interested in this natural setting, it offers another perspective on Mondonville alongside its buildings and green spaces.

From a town walk to a hike

The PR20, “Dans la peau du naturaliste de Bouconne,” starts in the Cœur de ville and leads to Bouconne Forest. Its length is clearly specified: 18.5 kilometres. This makes it different in scale from the Parcours patrimonial, with its seven information panels: one is described as a longer hike, the other as an educational walking trail through the town.

Mondonville lies on the edge of Bouconne Forest, which is managed by the Office National des Forêts. Its many trails are used by walkers and mountain bikers. If you’re considering the PR20 hike, you can distinguish its stated destination, Bouconne Forest, from the forest’s wider trail network; the information describes different aspects of the nature experience.

Cultural programme for children

As part of the municipal cultural programme, Martine from “Lire et faire lire” tells stories for children at “Histoires sur le tapis” at the Médiathèque once a month on Wednesdays. During school holidays, the programme also offers “ciné-goûters” on Wednesday afternoons: a film followed by a snack. As dates may change, it’s worth checking the current programme if you’d like to plan your visit around one of these events.
