Marked trails, Pyrenees views and cultural traces give you several starting points for planning a trip to Melles. The extensive hiking area is a major focus; other highlights include a botanical garden, the church of Melles and historical connections. You can decide whether trails and scenery, or also natural history, religious art and remembrance, should shape your trip.

Hiking trails and Pyrenees views

The marked Sentier n° 1 leads from Melles to the “Mémorial de l'Ours.” The also-marked Sentier n° 5 is called “Le chemin des mines de Pala Bidaou.” The names offer different clues: the first names a destination, while the Pala Bidaou mines feature in the second trail's name.

The GR® 10 connects Melles with Oô and offers panoramic views of the Pyrenees. Hikes in Melles also offer views of Pic du Crabère. This gives you the choice of making either a view of a specifically named mountain or a broader Pyrenees panorama a focus of your hike.

When choosing a trail, you can decide based on different points of reference: Sentier n° 1 leads to a named destination, the GR® 10 connects Melles with Oô, and Sentier n° 5 features Pala Bidaou in its name. This lets you compare a named destination, a route connection and a trail theme.

The hiking area also includes former mines that can be visited as attractions. They add a historical dimension to the views and scenery on offer in the hiking area.

Nature and the botanical garden

At the edge of the village of Melles, the botanical garden “A FLEUR DE MONTAGNE” lies in a protected setting. It introduces the flora of the Pyrenees range, giving plants their own place alongside panoramic views of the mountains and Pic du Crabère. This offers a different connection with nature for choosing your focus: here, Pyrenean plant life takes center stage, while the trails and views bring the landscape into focus. You can therefore consider scenery and botany as distinct themes.

Church, remembrance and festival culture

The church of Melles has paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross. These religious images provide a cultural point of interest alongside the village's nature and mining themes.

On the “Chemins de la liberté” route, you can trace in Melles the history of the Maquisards, people seeking to flee, opponents, resistance fighters and refugees from the Retirada. This historical connection differs from the Stations of the Cross paintings in the church and adds remembrance of these groups to the range of themes.

The Melles festival program for August 2024 also included a traditional “Eclade de Moules,” organized by the Confrérie des Saoumets. This adds a dated culinary aspect of the village festival to the hiking, nature and history themes.
