Flourens combines nature at Lac de Flourens with local history: at the lake, waterbirds and a 2.7 km loop take centre stage. Saint Martin Church houses a 16th-century Pietà; the Mairie-école, built in 1884 on the village square, is a reminder of the region’s architectural tradition.

Lac de Flourens: Birds and Trails by the Water

Lac de Flourens is an artificial lake covering 7 hectares. It is used for recreation and fishing. Nature watching is also a specific attraction: waterbirds can be observed here year-round, and mallards and grey herons can be seen daily. The same lake therefore offers recreation, fishing and the chance to observe particular bird species.

A 2.7 km loop at Lac de Flourens runs along the water and beneath the canopy of large trees. Five educational stations along the loop focus on common animals and plants. The route and stations draw attention to two aspects of the natural environment: the shoreline and the common species covered by the educational displays.

A trail by Lac de Flourens is accessible to everyone and designed especially for people with visual impairments and people with reduced mobility. If you take such needs into account when planning, this makes a helpful point of reference when choosing a route.

Church and Village History

Saint Martin Church was deeply shaped by the Wars of Religion. It houses a 16th-century PietĂ  on a marble plinth. These are two distinct perspectives on the church: the PietĂ  is an individual sacred work of art with its own date, while the Wars of Religion shaped the history of the church as a whole. This allows the history of art and the history of the church to be distinguished without dating the PietĂ  to the time of the wars.

The new Mairie-école was built on the village square in 1884, following the architectural tradition of the Toulouse region. The French name combines mairie (town hall) and école (school), referring to the two municipal functions. Compared with the 16th-century Pietà, the Mairie-école belongs to a much later period in the village’s history. The two subjects represent different cultural perspectives: sacred art and religious history on the one hand, and municipal architecture on the other.

A description of a walking tour published in September 2023 starts at the lake. The route passes through the village centre to an information board and continues towards a chapel. Unlike the lakeside loop, this itinerary also takes in the village centre and the path towards the chapel. Before your trip, check whether the leaflet with the description is available.
