In Montlaur, you can choose between an extensive hike and several historical themes as distinct highlights. The Boucle de Maravals combines exercise with views over the Hers Valley; the château, mill, churches and agricultural museum offer other ways to explore the town’s history. You can decide whether you would like to set aside more time for a hike or for cultural attractions.

Hiking the Boucle de Maravals

The Boucle de Maravals starts at the car park by Montlaur town hall. The route is 9.23 kilometres long, takes about three hours and is rated moderate. Its length and approximate duration give you a concrete basis for planning your day: this is a hike that requires a significant amount of time, not a short walk. Along the way, you can enjoy views over the Hers Valley; on a clear day, they extend as far as the Pyrenees. If you want to combine scenery and exercise, this is a clearly described highlight with a known starting point and timeframe.

Château, mill and churches: different periods of history

The Château de Montlaur is a 17th-century pastel-coloured château; its towers rest on corbels. The ground floor contains a salon with decorative wallpaper. The façades and roofs of the outbuildings were listed for protection by decree on 21 December 1982. The château therefore combines a distinctive architectural style with a specific protection date for its outbuildings.

Le moulin d’En Cos was in operation until the 1950s. The original millstones, the large mill wheel and an ornate wooden hopper with a carved horse’s head have been preserved. Its operating period places the mill in its historical context, while the surviving parts also show the different elements it comprised.

The churches, too, represent different periods. The wall bell tower of Église Saint-Lautier was replaced by an octagonal bell tower in the 19th century. Notre-Dame de Maravals dates from the 16th century and stands on the site of a priory founded in the 11th century. The comparison reveals two different historical connections: at Saint-Lautier, the focus is on a structural alteration; at Notre-Dame, on a church at an older priory site.

Agricultural museum and leisure activities

La Ferme d’Autrefois reconstructs a complete rural farm from the Lauragais region. The museum presents a reconstruction of rural life from 1890 to 1960, with more than 2,430 restored tools and household objects. Visits are by appointment. The museum therefore differs from a walk you can plan freely, both in theme and in the arrangements required.

Paintball XXL offers games on a 3,000-square-metre site, with protective equipment and various scenarios. Games must be booked in advance. The PĂ´le Hippique de Montlaur is less than a ten-minute walk from Montlaur station; the stated journey is about eight minutes for 668 metres. This walking time refers to the route from the station to the PĂ´le Hippique.

Your choice therefore depends on your interests and the planning involved: the Boucle is a hike with a defined timeframe, the churches and château offer historical highlights, and the museum and paintball require advance arrangements. You can choose between these different highlights based on what you would like to experience during your stay in Montlaur.
