Daux brings together several distinct themes for a stay: historic defensive architecture, the Boucle de Daux walking loop, Bouconne Forest and a Friday evening market. Visitors drawn to the town for its architectural history will find examples dating from the 14th to the 18th century, as well as traces of its former fortifications. The Boucle de Daux offers a different perspective, while the forest adds a designated protected area to the mix. You can therefore plan your trip around architecture, a walking route, nature or the market.

Architectural history and traces of the fortifications

The bell tower of Église Saint-Barthélémy is an octagonal brick structure dating from the 14th century. It is listed as a historic monument and is typical of the Toulouse region. It also served as a defensive tower: guards protected the village with three small cannons. The church interior contains a very large collection of stained-glass windows. The tower thus combines a regionally characteristic structure with a specific role in the village’s defence.

The 17th-century Château de Peyrolade stands in the centre of the village and was part of its fortifications. In 1626, it was raised and fitted with battlements and weather vanes. Traces of the former walls and deep ditches of the fortified village are still visible today. The château’s renovation and the surviving traces of the fortifications show different aspects of the town’s history: a dated alteration to a building on the one hand, and remnants of the former village defences on the other.

Château de Lalo has three square towers with small loopholes; the fourth tower has disappeared. The château underwent extensive renovation in 1760, followed by several restorations. It is privately owned and cannot be visited. Check its visitor access status again before your trip.

Walking the Boucle de Daux

The Boucle de Daux is a circular walking route that starts and ends in Daux. It offers views across the Save Valley and follows the Ribarot stream. The route also passes through the Poterne de l’Isle, a narrow passage between houses. With its valley views, stream and passageway, the walking loop combines landscape features with elements of the village. It is a distinct focus alongside the historic buildings: the route brings together scenic views and a specific architectural detail.

Bouconne Forest

Bouconne Forest covers more than 2,700 hectares in total, of which 160 hectares lie within the municipality of Daux. It is designated as a ZNIEFF and is home to rare plant and animal species. The forest has been protected since 2009. The two area figures distinguish the forest as a whole from the part within the municipality, clarifying its local connection. For travellers interested in nature, the protected status and rare species offer a distinct perspective alongside the town’s history and the walking loop.

Friday evening at “Le coin gourmand”

The “Le coin gourmand” market is held in Daux every Friday evening. It offers local produce and prepared dishes. Before your trip, check whether the market will be taking place on the day of your stay.
