Peyrusse-Grande can be explored from several perspectives: the history of the former feudal village, Église Saint-Mamet, Lac de Saint-Laurent and a challenging e-mountain bike route each offer a different focus. There is also a vineyard tour available by reservation. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether cultural history, landscape or a sporting outing should take centre stage.
Village Ridge and Historic Route
Peyrusse-Grande is considered a former feudal village built along a ridge. This ridge is called La Ténarèze or route de César. A historic route also bears the name La Ténarèze: it passes through Bars and Peyrusse-Grande, among other places, then continues via Eauze towards Bordeaux. The exact course of this route is disputed. The historic route is disputed; the name is also used for the village ridge.
Architecture and Religious Tradition
Église Saint-Mamet is the former church of a Cluniac priory. Its transept, choir and chapels date from the 11th century. The layout of the apse is particularly unusual: it consists of three separate sections—the choir and the offset side chapels. The painting “Crucifixion” is also housed in the church. On 22 October 1997, it was listed as a protected movable object. The two dates refer to different things: the 11th century to the architectural features mentioned, and 22 October 1997 to the painting’s protection status.
Chapelle Notre-Dame du Verger is also one of Peyrusse-Grande’s attractions; a spring described as miraculous is associated with it. The Forêt domaniale d’Armagnac is also among the village’s attractions. Alongside the architectural details of Saint-Mamet, this offers further religious and landscape themes to explore.
Lake and E-Mountain Bike Route
Lac de Saint-Laurent is located in the municipalities of Peyrusse-Grande, Bassoues and Gazax-et-Baccarisse. It covers 41 hectares and is up to seven metres deep. Its area and maximum depth offer two different ways of measuring the lake. It thus provides a distinct landscape focus alongside the village’s history and religious buildings.
The Route des Crêtes en VAE is a challenging e-mountain bike circuit that also passes through Peyrusse-Grande. It is 36 kilometres long, with a stated duration of four hours. This makes it a clearly defined sporting option in terms of time, distinct from the village’s cultural and historical themes. The published route details may be changed by the operator. Check trail conditions before setting off.
Vineyard Tour by Reservation
Christine, host and winemaker at Gîte Le Cabanot, offers a tour of her vineyard in the AOC Saint Mont by reservation, followed by a tasting on her terrace. When planning, two different questions therefore come into play: the e-mountain bike route has a stated duration of four hours, while the vineyard tour requires a reservation.
