Jû-Belloc offers nature trails and mill heritage as two distinct ways to experience the area. The Site naturel de Jû-Belloc-Hères-Castelnau natural area covers 100 hectares in the communes of Jû-Belloc, Hères and Castelnau-Rivière-Basse. Its habitats include saligues, riparian woodlands, dry acidophilous grasslands and oxbow lakes. The natural area lies within the “Vallée de l’Adour” Natura 2000 site and is also listed in the ZNIEFF inventory. The diversity of the landscape provides a setting for walks; named walking trails and historic sites in Baulat and Belloc offer different points of interest alongside it.

Natural surroundings and walking trails

It is also worth distinguishing between the natural area and the route when it comes to the trails: the Sentier de l’Adour runs through only part of the area. The area has a short walking loop, which takes around an hour and a half. This is an approximate guide; local conditions may vary. Various sections of the Sentier de l’Adour can be downloaded from the Syndicat Mixte Adour Amont website. The estimate of around an hour and a half applies to the loop in the natural area, not to the Sentier de l’Adour as a whole. This is a practical distinction for planning: the time estimate is for a circular walk, while the downloadable sections are for the named trail.

Le Grand Gambadour passes through the village of Belloc and follows a route back via Baulat. Unlike the walking loop in the natural area, this route focuses on the sequence of places along the way, while an approximate walking time is given for the loop.

Mill heritage and historic sites

Baulat has a rich heritage of mills and washhouses. The Moulin de Baulat is a place where you can discover the mills of Rivière-Basse. In Belloc, a former medieval gate lies along the route. Check access locally if you plan to visit the gate specifically. The historic features are distinct: Baulat is associated with mills and washhouses, while Belloc is associated with the former gate. This offers a separate focus for culture enthusiasts alongside the nature trails.

Educational trail and seasonal activities

The Maison de l’eau offers a different perspective on nature: a playful educational trail winds between woods and waterways, with observation stations suitable for children. Unlike the walking trails mentioned above, the focus here is on learning at the stations. If seasonal activities are part of your plans, check the latest information in advance, as these offerings may change.

Tasting at Lou Palancot

At Lou Palancot, a visit to the herd includes a guided tasting, selecting and preparing a piece of meat for grilling over a brazier, and wine pairings chosen by the Brumont family. This format combines the tasting with hands-on participation in preparing the meat for grilling. A booking is required for a visit to Lou Palancot; for Le Grand Gambadour, however, you should check the latest trail conditions in advance.
