Saint-Pierre Cathedral was built in the 16th century on the site of an 11th-century abbey church. In Condom, this architectural history is complemented by an Armagnac museum, markets and trails with clearly stated distances. You can therefore choose culture, local produce and physical activity as different priorities for your stay.
Cathedral, museums and city history
Saint-Pierre Cathedral has a floor plan typical of southern French Gothic architecture: a wide single-nave church with side chapels between the buttresses. The cloister adjoining the cathedral was also built in the 16th century. Its grand scale and elegant arcades offer another perspective on the architecture of this period.
The Musée de l’Armagnac has been housed in the outbuildings of the former bishop’s palace since 1981. Its exhibition focuses on the production cycle of Armagnac brandy and the development of its production. On display is a monumental press weighing 18 tonnes. Other exhibition areas cover agricultural, viticultural, distilling and cooperage techniques. The museum thus offers a distinct perspective on the history of Armagnac production.
The Museum of Sacred Art in Pradau is housed in a medieval church that was deconsecrated in 1984 and listed as a historic monument. Exhibits and architectural features include a Romanesque portal, a painted 17th-century coffered ceiling, sacred objects and 18th-century paintings by Jean-Baptiste Smets. The Espace Artistique Saint-Michel offers a different cultural focus: this gallery for temporary contemporary art exhibitions is housed in a former church built in 1869 and deconsecrated in 1975. Free visits and temporary exhibitions are offered; opening is seasonal.
Lialores: church and archaeological collection
The church of Lialores is the last surviving remnant of a Benedictine priory founded by Condom Abbey and is listed as a historic monument. It was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Lialores. One of its side aisles houses a small archaeological collection relating to prehistoric and ancient settlement in the Lialorais and Ténarèze. The church offers free visits and guided tours; check current opening times before visiting.
Every year on 15 August, a Palet gascon championship is held in Lialores. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the event details in advance.
Markets and practical information
Condom’s covered market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Under Condom’s market hall, the Saturday producers’ market offers local products such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, black pork, foie gras and pastries. At the Bouquerie market, regional producers sell their products on Sunday mornings. Public toilets and a drinking water station are available under the covered Bouquerie market hall. Check the current municipal schedule before visiting; times and vendor stalls may change.
The Condom town archives are open to the public on Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and by appointment. If a visit is of interest to you, confirm the current opening hours and appointment arrangements in advance.
Trails and nature around Condom
Condom lies on the Via Podiensis, one of four routes to Santiago de Compostela. The route begins in Le Puy-en-Velay and is 750 kilometres long. Another historic feature is the 35-kilometre section between Lectoure and Condom, which is part of the serial property of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
There are trails of varying lengths and connections to choose from for outdoor activities. The paved Voie Verte de l’Armagnac runs for 33 kilometres along a former railway line and connects Condom with Eauze; it is suitable for walking, cycling and family outings. The 11-kilometre Sentier de la Baïse connects the ports of Condom and Valence-sur-Baïse on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Its length, endpoints and travel options provide a useful basis for comparison when planning.
Gauge Island is a protected natural area between the navigable Gauge Canal and the Baïse River. Information panels explain the local wildlife and plant life. The Base de Loisirs de Gauge is freely accessible for walking and fishing; it has a playground and picnic tables. Lake Bousquetara is a fishing spot and a remarkable wetland in Condom and Castelnau-sur-l’Auvignon.
