The circular hike “Vallée du Verzolet et plateau d'Hermilix” starts in front of the church in Versols and returns to Versols. The area also offers hiking trails, the Sorgues River and traces of regional architectural history. When planning, it is worth comparing the different route profiles as well as the distinctive sites around Hermilix and in Versols.

Hiking: Compare Route Length, Duration and Elevation Gain

The circular hike “Vallée du Verzolet et plateau d'Hermilix” is rated moderate. It is 10.9 kilometres long, with a stated duration of three hours. It starts in front of the church in Versols and finishes back in Versols. Before setting out, check the access information for the starting point; route details may be updated.

The moderate Trail N°29 Versols–Hermilix is also a circular route. It is listed as 17.4 kilometres long, with 673 metres of elevation gain and loss, and a duration of two hours and 15 minutes. Compared with the other route, it is longer and its elevation gain and loss are explicitly stated, but its listed duration is shorter than the three hours given for the shorter loop. When weighing your options, therefore, consider distance, elevation gain and the stated time separately. Trail conditions can change; check the latest information before setting out.

In addition to these two routes, several hiking trails start in Versols or Lapeyre. They lead, among other places, to the Plateau de la Loubière, the Avant-Causses and Hermilix. From Trail N°29, you can see the Chapelle de Notre-Dame du Cayla. It is about two kilometres from Versols, on a rocky outcrop above the gorge. The distance and the view from the trail are different points of reference for planning; no walking time is specified.

Water Landscapes and Traces of Pastoral Farming

On the Causse d'Hermilix, the “De la vallée du Verzolet au plateau d'Hermelix” route passes through a landscape shaped by agro-pastoral activities. The Lavogne d'Hermilix is a striking example of this use: the large water basin is lined inside with stone slabs and is used to water sheep. It is also a refuge for numerous animal species and forms a small, species-rich ecosystem. The condition of the structure and habitat conditions may change; check the situation before visiting.

The Sorgues River also shapes the landscape. It crosses the municipality from east to west for about seven kilometres and flows into its tributary, the Versolet, near the centre of Versols. The Sorgues is classified as a first-category river for fishing and is particularly suitable for the activity. Before fishing, check the applicable rules and conditions.

Dolmen, Church and Castle History

The Dolmen de Hermilix is a simple-type dolmen on a tumulus about eight metres in size. Thus, at Hermilix, a prehistoric monument stands alongside a landscape shaped by pastoral farming. In Versols, the Église Saint-Thomas is a listed historic monument. A restored 16th-century church in Versols also houses a folk painting from the 17th century depicting Saint Thomas placing his finger in Christ's wound.

The Château de Versols dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and is listed as a historic monument. The protected features include façades and roofs, the Gothic Tinel Hall with its fireplace, and surviving remnants of wall paintings. Guided, narrated tours of the château are offered, explaining the historical and architectural development of the castrum and castle. Tours may be seasonal; check the dates before your trip.

The history of the village also includes its fortifications: around 1360–1370, the village was fortified again against the English. These defences included a gate, three corner towers and two outer watchtowers. This historical context complements the other heritage sites without attributing the fortifications to the castle.

Getting Your Bearings and Finding a Hotel

Versols is on the D 7, ten kilometres south of Saint-Affrique. The car park is just after the bridge, on the left bank opposite the village. Road and parking conditions can change; check the information before setting off. If you are looking for a hotel, you can factor your planned activities and their starting points into your travel plans: hiking trails start in Versols or Lapeyre, and the circular hike starts in front of the church in Versols.
