Sanvensa can be explored through both its history and a dedicated audio experience. “Oreilles en balade” takes you from the town hall to the lake via six stops; the communal bread oven brings residents’ stories into the walk. This gives you different options when planning your trip: historic details about the village or a peaceful break at Étang de Sanvensa, where you can enjoy a picnic.

Audio Walk and Bread Oven

“Oreilles en balade” is an audio walk with six listening stations from the town hall to the lake. You’ll need a smartphone to access the audio recordings. One stop is the communal bread oven: scan the QR code on the sign to hear residents tell the story of the oven.

The communal bread oven was restored at the end of 2022, and the restoration was completed in spring 2024. Traditionally, the Authesserre family fired it every 15 days to bake large loaves of bread, which other local families could also enjoy. The former baking practice and the later restoration thus represent two distinct periods.

Château and Village History

The Château de Sanvensa was built in 1575 by Jean de Morlhon, Seneschal of Rouergue. It has a truncated square keep. On the south side, the château has two round towers with corbels, which once supported machicolations.

The château is partially protected as a historic monument. A decree dated 29 December 1967 placed its façades and roofs under protection. It is privately owned and not open to visitors. Check access arrangements before your trip, as these may change for privately owned properties.

The Église Sainte-Anne de Sanvensa was dedicated to Saint Anne in 1888. Together with the château’s construction in 1575, these provide two distinct historical dates: the church’s dedication and the château’s year of construction.

Landscape, Pond and Getting There

Sanvensa is located on the Ségala plateau and overlooks the Aveyron Valley and the plain of Monteils. At Étang de Sanvensa, the focus shifts: the pond offers a place to enjoy a picnic and some peace and quiet. The Étang thus provides a more tranquil experience than the historical themes of the audio walk.

Sanvensa is included in the ZNIEFF “Vallée de l'Aveyron”; the inventory area covers 14,643.98 hectares. This area refers to the ZNIEFF, not to the municipality alone. Ecological inventory data may be revised over time.

Nearby, Villefranche-de-Rouergue and Najac are served by trains on the Toulouse–Aurillac line. Both towns are on the same railway line. Check current timetables and connections before deciding how to travel.
