Nauviale lies at the confluence of the Dourdou and Créneau rivers. Highlights of a stay include the unusual orientation of the Église Saint-Martin, the château’s architectural history, and routes offering views of valleys and vineyards. The different highlights range from individual architectural details to a circular route with a specified distance. This lets you tailor your focus on heritage, landscape, and wine to your interests.

Church and movable heritage

The portal of the Église Saint-Martin is now on the east side; because of this orientation, the church is known as a reversed church. Another architectural detail is a depiction of a pilgrim of Saint James on a pillar at the entrance to the north transept. Nauviale also has a 16th-century processional cross, classified as an object under the Monuments historiques since 1906. The two dates serve different purposes: the 16th century indicates when the cross was made, while 1906 marks the start of its classification.

Traces of châteaux with different histories

Among the remains of the Château de Beaucaire are part of a 14th-century curtain wall and the base of the keep. An educational trail with information panels covers the history and layout of the site, as well as its wildlife, plant life, and local geology. Exploring the building remains thus goes hand in hand with learning about nature and the geology beneath the site.

The Château de Combret’s construction history spans five centuries and includes several building and design phases. Its earliest form was a structure with a tower and a residential building, strategically situated above the Créneau Valley. In contrast to the surviving parts of the Château de Beaucaire, the focus here is on the site’s long development and its early layout.

Routes through the landscape

The “Entre Dourdou et Créneau” hike from Nauviale offers views of the Créneau Valley, Puech de Kaymard, and Vallon de Marcillac. The landscape there includes terraced vineyards and red sandstone buildings. These named viewpoints give the hike a different profile from a route described primarily by its distance and elevation gain.

The Parcours Trail Nauviale No. 12 is a moderate circular route covering 16.9 kilometres with 430 metres of elevation gain. It passes through red clay soils and by characteristic farmhouses and small hamlets, and starts at the town hall car park. When choosing between the two routes, you can refer to the information available: the hike is distinguished by its named viewpoints, while the trail’s circular format, difficulty level, distance, and elevation gain are specified. As route details may be updated, check the current route description before setting out.

Wine and visitor experiences

La Coupette uses hand harvesting, natural yeasts, and traditional winemaking methods. It produces organic wines from Aveyron in red, white, and rosé, and also offers tastings at the estate. Domaine des Costes Rouges has a different focus: guided winery tours are available exclusively to groups. They explain the journey of the grapes from vineyard to bottle. So, if you’re planning a winery tour, the group-only restriction is part of the practical visit information.
