From the panoramic terrace of Notre Dame du Camarès, enjoy 360-degree views across Camarès and its surroundings. The building’s origins also tell part of the town’s history: Notre Dame du Camarès was built in 1946 using stone from Lens (Gard), on the former bell tower of the Church of St. Michel. Here, the view and the building’s history offer a tangible introduction to the town. If you are looking for accommodation in Camarès, you can also take its historic routes and nature activities into account alongside the views.

Local history between the upper town and the walking route

The historic walking route starts at the tourist office and leads through narrow, steep lanes into the upper town. The route’s terrain is a practical consideration for your visit: the lanes are part of the walk, and you should take their steepness into account when planning. Other local historical landmarks include the Pont Vieux, a structure dating from the 11th century, and the Château de la ville with its rose garden. The Noria in Camarès is a mill complex known as a “moulin-manège.” You will encounter a range of historical features: an old bridge, a rose garden and a mill complex with a distinctive name.

A digital cultural route

The digital tour “Balade numérique à Camarès” leads through the medieval town and tells “La mémoire des deux rives.” As a cultural walk of about 1.5 hours, it gives you a time frame for your visit. It can be accessed using the free “Balades Grands Causses” mobile app. Unlike the historic walking route, whose path through steep lanes is described, the digital tour provides an approximate duration and a narrated route. Before setting out, check whether the app is available and what technical requirements apply.

Discover the geology and nature of the Rougier

The “Le Cœur du Rougier” interpretation trail is 1 km long and offers information about geology, flora, biodiversity and agropastoralism. This gives it a different focus from the cultural routes through Camarès: here, nature and agricultural land use take centre stage. From Camarès, you can reach the trail by car via the D10 and then the D101; a car park is located beyond the Ferme de Sénégas. Check the directions and car park information again before you set off.

Horse-riding activities and a look at farm life

The Poney Club – Centre équestre du Rougier offers pony rides and trail rides year-round, introductory sessions, lessons and riding courses, as well as multi-day trail rides. The activities range from introductory sessions to rides lasting several days. As booking and operating arrangements may change, confirm them in advance.

At Chez Nicolas et Vincent, a farm experience offers a glimpse into farmers’ daily lives and how they care for their animals. It includes a tasting or a meal featuring farm products. The visit thus combines insights into agricultural work with a culinary element. As this is a bookable experience, arrange your reservation in advance.

Water and leisure area

The Base de loisirs Camarès includes a body of water, a shaded area, barbecue facilities, picnic tables and a playground. Supervised swimming is available there in July and August. If you plan to swim, check the dates before your visit. The picnic tables and barbecue facilities also offer another reason to take a break; the shaded area and playground are also part of the leisure facilities.
