Boussac offers two clear starting points for planning a trip: the history of its church and hiking trails with specified walking times. The village centre lies on the slope between the Croix de Pierre hill and the Lezert valley. The church is also the starting point for the Gorg del saut and another hiking trail.

Church and Art History

The church was built around 1470 and is considered a rare example of a fortified church in Rouergue. It is classified as a historic monument; its protected status was established by decree on 28 October 1944. The two dates serve different purposes: around 1470 refers to its construction, while 1944 refers to the decree granting protection. The construction date and heritage protection are therefore two distinct points of reference for understanding the church.

The church's altarpiece also has its own date: it dates from the second quarter of the 16th century. It features a bas-relief of the Assumption of Mary, depicting the Virgin Mary and the twelve Apostles, as well as medallions in the antique style. For art-historical interpretation, the work offers a specific subject and a clearly identified group of figures; this approach differs from considering the church's fortified structure.

Hiking from the Church

The Gorg del saut starts at the church in Boussac and is listed as 3.4 km long, with 171 m of positive elevation gain and a walking time of 1 hour and 20 minutes. Another hiking trail also starts at the church; it is listed as 11.5 km long, with 475 m of positive elevation gain and a walking time of 3 hours. This gives two distinct timeframes: just over an hour and three hours. Distance and elevation gain add to the comparison and help you factor the amount of walking time into your day's plans.

The second trail is 8.1 km longer and has 304 m more positive elevation gain; its stated walking time is 1 hour and 40 minutes longer than that of the Gorg del saut. Since both start at the same church, these differences can be compared directly.

The PR8 offers a different point of comparison: it passes through woodland and pasture sections and includes three footbridges in succession. Here, the focus is on the trail sections and the footbridges, rather than the figures for the two hikes starting at the church.
