The Les coteaux du Latou circular walk is a clear starting point for planning a trip around Villeneuve-Du-Latou: it leads over ridges, through forests and across cultivated fields. The architecture of the Église Saint-Martin and the First World War memorial located there offer a different perspective. Exploring the landscape, church architecture and commemorative culture provide distinct focal points.
Les coteaux du Latou circular walk
The circular route is 11 kilometres long, rated moderate and takes approximately three hours. The start and finish are in the square in front of Villeneuve-Du-Latou town hall. From the D626a, a turning leads to the town hall. The route runs between two nearby villages and links ridges, forest sections and cultivated fields. This means the walk takes in different types of landscape rather than being limited to a single kind of trail. The three figures describe different aspects rather than interchangeable recommendations: 11 kilometres is the distance, around three hours is the approximate duration, and “moderate” is the difficulty rating. This lets you consider the time required, distance and difficulty separately. The square in front of the town hall serves as both the start and finish; the turning off the D626a indicates the route to the starting point.
The walking routes presented there are maintained and signposted year-round. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The approximate duration can help you plan your day; you can allow extra time for breaks according to your own pace.
Directions and a break
The picnic tables at the Salle des fêtes offer a specific place to take a break. They are located at the roadside in front of the village hall and are freely accessible. As facilities can change, check their condition before your visit.
Église Saint-Martin: architecture and remembrance
The Église Saint-Martin has three naves. The choir ends in a pentagonal apse, with two semicircular apses alongside it. The three naves divide the main space lengthwise. The side apses adjoin the choir.
The First World War memorial is located in the Saint-Joseph Chapel of the parish church of Saint-Martin. It consists of an altar, a tabernacle, two statues, two commemorative plaques and a stained-glass window.
The Castel site and historic landscape
The southern tip of the Castel site overlooks the Latou valley. Behind the site is a small, landscaped promontory that was protected by a ditch. The southern tip may have held a fortification.
The Ferme du Fillol was featured. At the Biodiversity Festival held in Villeneuve-Du-Latou on 25 and 26 May 2024, it was presented as a site under conservation management.
